Which is the best way to go with these OBD II readers, cheap and cheerful from ebay for £3 or pay £20 for supposedly better ones from Amazon?

I saw and ad for one of these Car Dr OBD II readers and they`re around £20 - £25, unsure if they`re any different to the el cheapos  ???

Pointers anyone?

For screwing up my pc  >:(

Got an update yesterday, after the restart I noticed that the time was one hour slow, so into time and date settings strangely the date, location and auto daylight saving were correct so I have no idea what has happened there.

Then I noticed apps missing from the toolbar and a shed load of bookmarks missing from Chrome  ::) It`s almost as if it has been set back eighteen months.

Also none of the recovery options work either, always some problem why it can`t complete the task and there are no restore points either, all gone  ???

A clean install it is then, fortunately I keep next to nothing on my C drive apart from essentials so it will be quite straight forward, just bloody annoying  :(

General Car Chat / Interesting Comparison
« on: 17 October 2017, 10:28:45 »
I saw this on the BBC home page earlier, an emissions comparison to a 24 year old Golf petrol and a 9 year old Octavia Diesel.

Quite clear cut and expected result but then when they compare the Octavia to new diesels it`s a bit of an eye opener.

Do these things only read the speed of oncoming traffic or do they also read the speeds of traffic heading away, i.e. on the other carriageway of a dual carriageway  :-X

I`ve just cleaned up my alloys from my old Omega, putting them on here before the bay of E, and judging by the amount of people on here that dont like black alloys I may be wasting my time  ;D

These are Azev C`s powder coated in dark anthracite, 8x17" et38.

Two Dunlop Sportmaxx RT`s 245/45/17 with only 500 miles of use.
Two Goodyear Eagle Asym2  245/45/17 with 2-3mm tread left.

I`m looking for £250 plus carriage.

General Discussion Area / Windows 10 e-mail client
« on: 03 May 2017, 22:41:04 »
I decided to start using the Win1o e-mail client for work as it is less restrictive of the size of attachments than OWA that I`m currently using.

One problem though is that when some e-mails are sent with attachments it spits it dummy out and then neither sends or receives e-mails for days meaning I then have to go back to OWA which only allows 5mb per attachment.

Outlook would be better but it won`t sync with my works e-mail address for some reason (even though I get messages from Outlook in my works e-mails).

Has anyone used the Win 10 e-mail client and had any problems and are there any fixes? Last time it was a week before it started to sync again.

General Car Chat / Trackers
« on: 26 March 2017, 21:26:20 »
Is there an easy way to locate an unwanted tracker in a car, It`s likely to be a sim card type cheapo tracker but just wondering if there an easy way to find it if it isn`t in the easy to get to places like behind the glovebox or ashtray.

The tracker was fitted by the uncle of SWMBO`s lads ex girlfriend, and now they split up he doesn`t their family knowing where he has moved to, his ex is a bit of a nutter  :D

General Car Chat / Corsa C Heat Shield
« on: 26 March 2017, 21:10:42 »
I`ve been doing a bit of work on SWMBO`s lads car this weekend, one job was to replace the handbrake cable, which to get at the lever end of the cable meant moving the heat shield to gain access.

As per every 17 year old car every retaining nut was rusted solid and snapped the studs.

I plan to refit it next weekend using some penny washers and some tek screws from work. These screws have a `drill` bit on the end to create a pilot hole and then self tap into the hole but are around 25mm long but the issue is, are they going to be too long and end up coming through the carpet as I have no idea what is beyond the underside of the floorpan.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated as long as it doesn`t involve welding  :y

General Car Chat / Bloody Italians
« on: 18 January 2017, 19:53:06 »
I decided to tackle the knackered resistor on SWMBO`s Fiat Panda on Sunday, got the part last week and after a look through the Haynes book of lies I think it shouldn`t be too bad a job, just a bit fiddly.

The part in question is located above the drivers footwell above the pedal assembly near the bulkhead  ;)

" Undo the bottom of the steering column and lift out of the way, reach up behind the facia, unclip the wiring plug, unscrew the retaining screw and remove the resistor. Refitting is the reverse of removal"

Sounds easy enough, right?  ;D

Here`s the picture in the manual

After two and a half hours of  laying on my back across the sill with my head under the clutch pedal trying to reach up towards what seems like the windscreen wipers, swearing and generally abusing Italians I gave up.

Here`s the reality

I think Haynes may have forgotten something........like the f*@cking wiring loom wedging the plug in and it`s nigh on impossible to move out of the way, not to mention the fact that I can barely get my hands on the plug to remove it anyway  >:(

How the hell can you build a car with something designed to be moved  and then wedge the bleedin thing in?

They`re best off sticking to pizza`s that`s all I can say  :-X
