Edward Heath went to a grammar school.

Can't think of anything positive to say about his time as PM......

If stop/start cars with AGM batteries have beefier alternators, is there not a danger that a normal battery would get 'over cooked' by the alternator and go bang?  ???  :-\
the chemistry is still the same so the target voltage should be the same (14.7v?) :-\

The impedance in the battery will probably limit the maximum current rather than the alternator.

Stop-start gives the battery a work out - potentially causing a reduction in battery life

I thought that AGM batteries were developed in an attempt to try to make the battery last a bit longer. :-\

My guess is that you won't notice any difference if you can manage to avoid using the stop-start. What we need is someone to drop a standard battery in and report back on longevity - can you think of anyone curious enough to try ?  ;D

Thanks for all the advice

Going to have a proper look tomorrow. Can i start the engine with the plenum removed to see where oil may ne cming from  or is that a no no
more like no no no  ;D
There will be no throttles attached so If it starts it will be like starting the engine with the throttle pedal mashed into the carpet.

My C-type Jaguar replica is due to go to the painter's this Monday, and I asked the paint honcho to look up Jaguar BRG..... he just called to say there were at least five different shades. And a search for BRG threw up 24 shades. I am looking for the very dark green used on the works racing C-types and D-types.
Does anybody have the correct colour code for a modern equivalent? We are not allowed to use cellulose any more, but I am told that the people in the paint shop are able to mix a two-pack to give a slightly mattish finish much like the appearance of cellulose. But I want to get the shade of green exactly right. Can anybody help?
Good luck with that one.

A quick search with google brings up a series of green c-types (plus a red one and a polished aluminium one). All the green ones are a different shade - it looks to me as though each one was mixed on the day with no reference to a colour chart.

On that basis I think you can legitimately pick a photo of the one you like best and ask them to mix that one for you  :)

Job jobbed - thanks for the guidance folks  :y  Put everything back together, with a bit of superglue for the timing cover and a repack with fresh grease for the aux belt tensioner pulley. Seems to run more smoothly - though that could just be imaginary having discovered one bank was previously a tooth out on the timing.

Of course, now that the tensioner pulley isn't making a screeching racket, I can hear what sounds like a very faint miss, or a splutter. It's only about every five or eight seconds apart, rather than constant and it seemed to fade away as the engine warmed up. Ah well, that'll give me something to look into next time, I guess...  ???
I wasted time and money fitting new leads & DIS coils to try to fix a slight misfire on my first V6 - problem was solved when I fitted new spark plugs.

Oh and had a second spring order cancelled. By Larkspeed this time.

If I can't get them direct from Bilstein, they'll have to come from Mercedes... Which I might just do for the sake of simplicity  :-\
It might be quicker/easier/cheaper to fit some airbags  :-\

While you have the backing plate off is an excellent time to change the thermostat, as you don't need to split the housing from the transfer tube to get them off the engine :y

TBH, I'm loathe to touch something that's not broken at the moment, unless given a compelling reason, cost and convenient (to me) parts availability. It comes up to temperature, thermostat opens, coolant flows, the fan kicks in when needed - so I'm inclined to kick that can down the road for the moment, though I'll add it onto the "fullness of time" list ...  :y
I am inclined to agree with you.
In the 14 years/200,000 miles that I drove V6 Omegas I had 1 thermostat go lazy (running too cool) and one rotten transfer pipe.

Sadly we can't turn them off remotely (its already feasible) even on Police request (legislation).

In fact the country I have ever seen where we were allowed to remote disable startrup was in the Netherlands
Doesn't happen often - an OOF post that has gone round in a circle and returned to the original topic  :P

What you found is pretty typical of just bunging the belt on, setting the tensioner and calling it done.

Broken cover backing plates aren't unusual either. If you replace it, bear in mind there are two different types.

That isn't the (metal) backplate though. It is the (plastic) front cover & cable tray. My recollection is that the backplate doesn't come off until the cam sprockets are off :-\

I think Darth Loony described the easiest way to release the thermostat:
- drain the coolant and remove the top hose from the transfer pipe
- plenum off and remove 2 bolts from thermostat housing.
- leave the bastard bolt in place for the moment
- use some BIG mole or vice grips on the body of the thermostat and keep working at it until it releases it's death grip on the transfer pipe.
- remove the bastard bolt and pull the transfer pipe out.

Are the airbags that expensive that they can't be replaced?  :-\

No alternative to genuine Merc ones?  ???
There are alternatives

Also - Back in 2016 AndyB paid to have Mercedes do the job. I don't think he was impressed by the customer service......... https://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=134169.0

....

I think it is a pump that is used on many vehicles that have auxiliary (diesel burning) heaters. IIRC SWMBOs diesel Galaxy had one which I replaced in a futile attempt to get cabin heat on journeys of less than 100miles. ...
That's a different thing. As GK says, the extra pump under the header tank is so you can run your heater with the engine off. My Omega never had this pump in the first place.
My R Class had the same set up & I used it about twice in 4 or 5 years so I doubt GK will miss is it if it doesn't work.
My point is that it is a generic pump and easily obtainable

44
Does it leak?

Why go to the trouble of removing it if it isn't causing any harm?

I think it is a pump that is used on many vehicles that have auxiliary (diesel burning) heaters. IIRC SWMBOs diesel Galaxy had one which I replaced in a futile attempt to get cabin heat on journeys of less than 100miles. I definitely didn't pay £200 for the new pump.

One person in the picture is clearly photoshopped 7:24 into the video. It looks like one of those prop photos you see on telly box where the picture is altered to look like the actor, but they haven't quite got the angle or lighting right
He never looked right to me - maybe it's the spray tan?
