Am I right in thinking that some of the 3.2's (MV6's ?) have limited slip differentials? (LSD)

Omega General Help / Re: Can't get the wheel off
« on: 19 October 2009, 15:26:12 »
Scary  :o

The wheel bolts are located in the wheel due to the taper on the bolt heads. The brake disk is clamped between the wheel and the hub (with a tiny 8mm securing screw that is only there to help you line the bolt holes up when you swap a wheel)

With the bolts loose you will be trying to shear the wheel bolts. They may have already been terminally weakened  :o

Apply releasing oil to the centre bore of the wheel (where it sits on the hub) every time you pass the car over the next two days. After that you should be able to grasp top & bottom of the wheel and waggle it until it gets bored and slides off  :y

The map lights in my 2003 2.6 definitely don't come on unless the engine is running (bit pointless really because the only time want to look at a map is before I start my journey) so i suspect you should be OK in your 3.2

I think the map lights in my 1994 worked without the ignition on though. :-/

Does that mean that having key redone, would mean anyone finding 'old' key would not be able to use it?
I would say if someone found you old keys and linked them to your car they would be able to drive it away :(

Nah, not if the remote has been changed and the immobiliser re-programmed with tech 2 (which would be neeed with a new key and remote)
But they would be able to open the doors (not sure if the alarm would sound :-/)

I bought one of these http://www.lasertools.co.uk/item.aspx?cat=372&item=3427 and found it very helpful. It did cost me £35 though. (and I couldn't get it onto the big hose clip next to the bastard bolt because of lack of space)

Omega General Help / Re: Spinning the engine
« on: 17 October 2009, 12:39:47 »
If you can't get all the oil out with syringe and kitchen roll  (or if you want to spin the engine to prime the oil pump)

My preference is to use one of these http://www.toolsdirect2you.co.uk/uploads/html/Sealey_Remote_Starter_Switch_1427_1.htm

It is just a switch with two crocodile clips on the end of the leads.

Disconnect the wire from the ignition switch on the back of the starter motor and use the remote starter switch to trigger the starter motor.

Make sure the gearbox is in neutral and the ignition is OFF before turning the engine over.

one thing I did notice was a metal plate bolted across the pipes not far from the cats, does that serve any real purpose?
Is it bolted to the back of the gearbox? It prevents the cats being stressed as the engine and gearbox vibrate and move about.

Later models run cooler - or at least the gauge is calibrated differently. My 3.2 runs at about 85 indicated on the gauge with the air con on. Turn off the air con and it will increase to just over 90 in traffic where the fans start.
I think it is caused by the temperature sender being in the coolant bridge. I think the water in the coolant bridge is returning to the engine from the heater matrix and is therefore giving a slightly misleading reading.

The facelift has an auxiliary coolant pump which exacerbates the issue.

I fitted a new genuine thermostat last week to cure a problem with my engine not reaching temperature. It is marked 92-107 deg C and it has cured the cool running problem but I definitely don't see a temperature of between 92 & 107 on the gauge (more like 85-90)

It does sound as though the servo is at fault. Split diaphragm maybe? or perhaps the gubbins inside that controls the air/vacuum has seized.

I won't insult your intelligence by asking if the new vacuum non return valve is in back to front. ;)

can't think why for MOT but anything on the gearbox? Was the engine running when you did the test?
ive done it with engine running and with just the ignition on both say the same

That code suggests transmission / ratio problem with is separate to the ABS / TC.

I would check all the leccy connectors are plugged in ok on the box
How does it work out the ratio? Does it compare road speed with engine rpm? If the ABS/TC was reporting a fault would the gearbox store a fault as a consequence?

Maybe the fault will clear once the box has had a chance to work through all the gears with a working ABS/TC ecu.

Omega General Help / Re: engine back pressure problem
« on: 15 October 2009, 17:03:57 »
There was a thread on here by someone who found that one of the non-return valves had failed in one of the stainless air injection pipes that bolt onto the exhaust manifolds.

I imagine that would cause hot exhaust gases to pressurise the FAI pipes without there being a fault with the CATS.

Omega General Help / Re: Very Poor MPG. Help Please.
« on: 15 October 2009, 15:22:27 »
My previous 2.5 V6 manual (CD, no cruise  :() used to manage 28 mpg in day to day driving but on a long motorway run the displayed average once crept up to 34mpg :y

I bought a 2003 Elite 2.6 Auto a couple of months ago & the consumption has been quite disappointing. On a long motorway run (1500 miles, Scotland & back) I couldn't get the displayed average better than 28mpg  >:(.

The engine wasn't warming up properly so last week I fitted a new thermostat. This week I did the 500 mile round trip to London & back and got the average up to 30.7mpg :y Where I live now is hillier than where I used to live & the new car is auto so I don't imagine I will ever get quite the same economy out of the new car as I did from the old one  :(

Sorting out the electronics is good but don't forget the old fashioned stuff

binding brakes
blocked air filter
under inflated tyres
incorrect cam timing
petrol leaks
[edit]
blocked exhaust
leaking exhaust (especially air leak between manifold & Lambda sensor)

Is it running at the correct temperature? (between 80 and 90 degrees celsius).

Has someone replaced the MID (computer display) and not coded it correctly?
