Directional tyres don't grip well the wrong way round...

At last! Thanks TB. Any reason why they are made that way?

Its an MOT advisory point if the rotation is wrong

Matchless's project 2 Cdx estate has a Mud and Snow tyre on the front rotating in the wrong direction.!

Being an advisory, does that mean its not actully dangerous?

It makes no odds......tyres off a written off car have been through the mill.....if one tyre wall suffered an impact it would be weakened and not always obvious.........it could blow at 10mph.....

so does everyone on here replace all 5 tyres when they buy a second hand car?

Would advise against it. Not sure it wouldn't pass an MOT.

Wasn't thinking of doing it James. It just occured to me. If I can, I get tyres for the MGZT off ebay. They start at £170 each new, so if I can get them cheaper, its well worth it. I got a nearly new set of 4 off ebay that had come from a written off mazda RX8 so , obviously, two for each side.( £200. Big saving)

But it got me thinking. You often see a single tyre for sale and there is never any mention of the direction of travel in the ad.

you dont see the mention of direction because its just the tyre and can be fitted to the wheel in two ways so each direction can be achieved it just depends which side its wanted for so if you have directional tyres you can only rotate them front to back never side to sied without taking the tyre off the rim and reversing the rim then refit

Many directional tyres also have an 'outside wall' as well, so cannot turn around to put on other side of car.  Certainly the SP9000's on mine can only be swapped front to back, and not side to side...

all directional tyres I've seen are CLEARLY marked on the sidewall showing not only the correct rotation direction, but also which side faces in and which side faces out. So it shouldn't be fitted the wrong way (unless the fitter is blind and/or illiterate, of course  ::))  ;D
