my temp gauge seems to move when im traveling at 80 mph (on a private rd) up to the 100 and sometimes past it. if i turn the heater blower on to full it very offen increases the temp readout by 5-10 deg's. if i slow down again or turn the heater of it will drop. when slowing down it will drop rather quickly and just seems like an electrical fault as i dont think that the car would cool down that quick.

any ideas guys? thanks

It could be a dodgy sender, dodgy gauge, dodgy connection, alternator over/under volts.

worth flushing coolant as matter of course anyway.

also measure battery voltage with ign off, and also at 2500rpm...

sounds like crap in the coolant to me, after a coolant flush in my 2.2 it was very eratic for a few miles but then settled down.

andi - when was the coolant last FLUSHED and not just topped up, also is it blue or Red?

tuned out to be the waterpump. it was getting worse so i changed the thermostat and tried again but a vx mechanic tol me to look at the pump. half of its plastic impellor had broken away. in he space of 3 days ive fitted a water pump to my mates 2.0 omega and now my td! are they all that bad?

No, they are not that bad.

But like all mechanical parts, they have a finite life.
Water pumps are one of those things that frequently get overlooked on servicing.

I choose to change mine with the cambelt (V6 petrol).
On a 2.0 4cylinder it is imperative to change with cambelt every 40k as it is driven by the cambelt (V6 is driven off the aux belt).

On a diesel it should be good for 50-60k easily. I suspect yours may have been considerably older...

Lucky escape though. That could have been a LOT worse.

Thinking back, I reckon the pump was the cause of the evils on my 3.0 Elite M reg that I got rid of.
