How did we manage without the internet?

We diid but it is hard to imagine! Things like making a hotel booking or finding a business and looking at nearby parking. Buying stuff online.

General Discussion Area / Hiring a car in Spain this year?
« on: 06 June 2023, 13:05:41 »
Book your hire car as early as you can. There is a shortage of vehicles particularly Costa del Sol.

There is no let up in holiday bookings this year , unsurpringly .

General Car Chat / Question for Mr MigV6 La Phroaig
« on: 05 June 2023, 23:27:48 »
Does the boxster come with a suitcase that fits in the front or is there a manufacturers one special for the job?

I switched tv on the other day and a couple pulled up at a hotel and he opened the bonnet and took out a perfectly sized alloy finished suitcase. I guess the dimensions at 20 inch by 20 by 45.

General Car Chat / Overheating?
« on: 07 May 2023, 10:35:57 »
We have gone away for five weeks to Northern Spain. Had the 2.0 Golf diesel serviced week before and checked levels before setting off. First day was cruising at 80 mph on motorways. Did about 360 miles. Car loaded up, aircon on as ever. Ambient temperature was a record scorching 38C ( for April). The journey included crawling through Seville.

Got to our hotel and only later in evening, did I spot a problem. Streaks of liquid stain radiating out from front passenger wheel rim and onto the tyres. At first, I thought it must be brake fluid but concluded it was likely coolant.

Left hotel and headed to nearest garage to buy 5 litres of coolant as the header tank was empty. Still no warning lights on dash to say coolant low. After a mile the warning light came on and went off when I topped header up. It only took about half a pint. Put car through their car wash ( so tyre was clean in case problem repeated) and then set off gently north. No repair garages open as it was May Day holiday weekend.

Did about 100 or so miles and found a hotel for two nights. Checked coolant level next morning and put a cupful in. That was the last time I needed to top it up. Since then we have done another 650 miles including motorway cruising but with outside temperatures lower.

When we get back next month, I will have to get the car looked at.

In the meantime, any ideas as to what the issue might be? Would there be any codes? Could it be that old favourite of faulty thermostat? I am thinking that maybe the radiator has some sludge which is reducing cooling efficiency but isn't evident under normal driving even in our murderous summer heat. It is after all a nine year, 115 k miles old car .

I cannot see any stain from a leak from header tank or the network of pipes but like all modern cars you cannot see much. Oil temperature , when warm, is exactly the same as it has always been.

General Discussion Area / Ukraine war developments
« on: 03 May 2023, 13:38:16 »
Couple of things caught my eye.

Thwarted drone attack on Putin in the Kremlin. Supposedly Ukranian. More likely a Russian stunt so they can reserve the right to respond in whatever manner they choose.

Russian ships were observed near the area where Nord Stream was blown up. Could be Russia thought a lack of energy supply would bring Europe ( Germany) to its knees and hasten a peace settlement in Russia’s favour? Whoever did it, it seemed to achieve the opposite.

New face of warfare. I am still thinking that Xi will broker a peace settlement this year.

General Discussion Area / UK alert test. 2
« on: 20 April 2023, 21:38:37 »
Is this forthcoming test in preparation for the Russians escalating the Ukraine conflict by disconnecting our undersea power and communcations cables?

Been plenty of evidence of them scoping out Scandinavian undersea infrastructure recently tooas well as North Sea stuff. They have had the ability to cut submarine cables for ages.

Might just be used as “ something wee could do” bargaining tool in the summer peace talks. Neither side can win in my view.

What do you think?

Couple of points.

Unsurprisingly , we have more speed cameras than last year..

Secondly, the police are enforcing the daft roundabout rules with fines. If in doubt stick to the nearside lane. Here is an expat thread on the subject.

Notwithstanding, do come. It is still a great holiday destination.

Did anyone else see the Goodwood Revival on ITV today? Worth watching the Lotus Cortina race. Qualifying was epic too. I think the suspension was somewhat stiffer than those of 58 ish years ago.

Nonetheless it brought back great memories.

General Car Chat / Self driving cars
« on: 04 April 2023, 13:45:34 »
Anyone experience of being in a self driving car?

Recently I was talking to a guy. His friend has a Tesla and he regularly comes back from London and  works in the car , just occasionally touching the steering wheel. Is that currently possible?

Second thing concerned overtaking. Say the prevailing speed limit is 60 and you encounter a vehicle ‘ dawdling ’ at 50, then a self driving car can overtake assuming it is safe and legal. I just assumed it would stay behind the slow vehicle.

Next big thing of course.

Cleverer ways of killing the enemy.

Doing away with 300 million jobs

Aside from my scepticism over giving machines control over our destiny, is anyone on the forum using AI?

Someone posted on an expat forum posted an answer ( quite comprehensive) compiled by AI.

I have an 18 year old friend who spends 10 minutes each morning asking his downloaded Chatbot (?)  questions

What do you think about AI ?

Referring to the ongoing protests about raising pension age to an astonishingly high 64. The poor mites. Haven’t they seen retirement age in other countries around them.

Might it bring down Macrons government? If so then we will no doubt see the axis of power in the EU shift further East.

General Discussion Area / RING doorbell help
« on: 06 March 2023, 11:25:25 »
Anyone had any experience setting one of these £60 devices please?

This is what I had hoped to achieve. Put one on my elderly dads back door in Yorkshire so that when we send deliveries we can liaise with the courier and so on from here in Spain.

Ideally I would be there to install and set up with my mobile present. None of my family are tech literate or interested. The device has just sat in its box at my dads.I havent got a uk trip scheduled.

I can think of several solutions. Eg

1 Send my phone to UK and pay a handyman to set it up and then send my phone back.

2 Have the device sent to Spain and set it up on my WiFi and then send it back but that would then involve a handyman pairing  it to my dads wifi ( I have the wifi password here) . Would that be easy?

3. Have the device set up on a.n. Others phone eg handyman and then somehow set it up on mine without the phone leaving Spain and then hope a.n.Other removes it from their phone.

4. Something else I havent thought of.

There are a couple of enablers. An elderly relative is visiting us shortly from UK and could bring the device and return it.

Any helpful suggestions gratefully received! TIA
