A revelation
« on: 29 April 2020, 19:24:37 »

Like most people in my generation, I used to live and breath a bit of footie in my younger days. And wasn't half bad at it as well.

But I rarely watch any games on the telly now.

With the lockdown, and no televised games, they have been showing some older games from the 90s, and that is when I had this revelation.  Back in the 90s, they played footie, and were proper men. The games were enjoyable, and was about the game.  Now its a game played by a bunch of poofters who are better actors than football players.

Back in the 90s, players rarely fell over without being touched, or purposely tripped over a trailing foot.  Nor did they were poofter tights or gloves.

Where as now, rather than playing footie, its a game of theatrics, constantly appealing any decision, be it fouls, or who's throw-in it is, and it seems the idea is to get in the penalty area and fall over.

No wonder I can't be dealing with it any more.  Its probably the reason I prefer womens footie over the poofters, because they play the game, not act it.

stop being woofers! ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't really recall, lengths and tightness of kits aside, much difference between the 70s, 80s and early 90s.  When that Nancy Henry came over in the late 90s, for me, that's when it all got a bit silly.

TV ruined Football....... especially the last decade or so where there are multiple camera's, instant replays with different angles.

Apart from the Euro's or World Cup, I do not watch football on TV as it's infuriating.  I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but nothing has changed within the game.  Every man for himself, which if that means falling over in a dramatic way to win a free-kick or penalty, that's always been!  It's just the TV viewer gets to see it 15 times before the Referee makes/doesn't make a decision.  Don't even get me started on VAR!

I would add that from my recollections of the past, listening to great uncles, great grandfathers, grand fathers and my father, each male generation has thought the new generation a load of girlie wimps who “wouldn’t last five minutes in the army!”  ::) ::) ::)

Why is it then that men seem to always undervalue the new generation lads just as they were once under estimated for their worth? ::) :P :D

As for football I as a child remember the antics of Nobby Stiles, who hacked other players down with some regularity and made my dad shout out about how that was “another filthy tackle!” ;D ;D ;D ;)

My "one claim to fame" is that I once saw Pele[and the Santos team]play in a friendly match against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.First half was a pretty standard game, then in the second half Santos turned on all the style and Sheffield hardly got a look in!!

TV ruined Football.......
I would argue that money ruined football, granted a large proportion of that money comes from TV. It's not about the game anymore, it's about who can afford the best team.

Having the best team and being able to play are very different things...

Just ask Man City...  ::)

I think those of us who like to watch a game of footie are quite aware of what the game has become. There is, indeed, far too much money sloshing around the game. There are, indeed, players who act like prima donnas. But...as one who has watched football through the 60's, 70's, 80's, etc., I can confidently say that the level of skill has increased dramatically. Lighter balls, designer boots and clubs getting hold of players at a very young age has vastly improved the technical level of the game. Lots of the players now would have been considered prodigious in the 80's, on a level with George Best.
You/we have a choice.....watch or don't/pay or don't pay.......it's up to you. Shouting at the telly is just the same now as it always was.

Yep.....most were still overpaid nancy boys back in the nineties.

Fifties, sixties, and seventies was the last time football was played by men. :)

Imagine what Best would have been like had he played the game in the 90,s or 00,s with lighter balls, designer boots, and management which actually guided young players and went to great efforts to look after their welfare and manage their PR off the pitch.
I doubt the Portugese ballet dancer would have got a look in.

I've never been into any football but Geo Best was brilliant on the pitch ..... his demon being drink and that was never going to be 'cured'
