We need to reassess what is important to society and the economy.

Occupations that are truly important such as carers, teachers, doctors, shop workers....etc..etc

Occupations (if you can call them that) that are unimportant such as footballers, F1 drivers, tennis players etc..etc.

That has already happened to an extent during the Blair years. GP,s for example were given huge payrises, so the minimum salary is in six figures, while releasing them from most of their traditional obligations to actually care for and appropriately treat their patients.
Now they earn very good money for doing nothing much. Its mainly a nine to five, Monday to Friday job, with plenty of time during a shift to make extra bucks by doing private work.
If NHS patients present a problem that cant get them out the door with a quick prescription for antibiotics or advice to take Paracetemol, they advise them to go to A&E.
traditionally, the Public sector had high job security, good pensions and terms and conditions, but less take home pay. They have kept the advantages and also pay his risen above private sector pay.
If you know which arses to kiss in the public sector now you can get an important sounding non job, with a salary higher than the Prime Minister.
In the end though, market forces will always have to apply to some degree. The alternative has been proven time and time again, not to work. You just end up with a smaller group of wealthy people, with the majority much poorer than they would be if they were being exploited in an evil Capitalist society.

I'm fine with market forces if the companies concerned take responsibility. But they don't, they expect the government (tax payer) to kiss it better.

Whatever happened to responsible capitalism. :)

We don't know if  "too big to fail" is true or not. We would have found out a decade ago, if it was handled differently, but it wasn't.
We may find out with the Eurozone in the not too distant future, as they might have to make that decision all over again. It was looking precarious before Covid, so god knows what it will look like after it.
I suspect it may well turn out that we made the Brexit decision at just the right time.

Our banks aren't going to fail. Every loan they're giving out is government backed. And before this crisis they were stress tested to death.

I have every confidence in our banks, the brains behind them would laugh at our comments on here , the one thing the UK does excel in is finance.

That is a remarkably socialist statement. I thought the banks were supposed to be the red meat of capitalism. :)

It's not socialist, it's factual.

It's a socialist fact.

But even with the taxpayer wiping the arse of the banking system I reckon it can still fail if the country can't borrow money.

I should add that the chances of the banks failing prior to 2008 was zero. :)

The banks are merely a facility for the government to get their grants and small business loans support to the business accounts directly.

Unfortunately because the snidey banker knutz types are going to make money from either the government or the small businesses in the process, they've made the money almost impossible to apply for by halving their staff and opening times.

Inspite of all of them being bailed out by said government when they forgot how to count twelve years ago >:(

What a load of cr@p.

Considering the level of debt most med students leave university with, and the fact they then have to train for 5 more years, after their 5yr medical degree, £58k isn't a lot compared to a number of other professions, which have far less responsibility attached to them.  ::)

Should have worked through their degrees rather than drinking through them then :-X
