My newly acquired f/l elite has an NCDC2013 with colour satnav, but the GPS letters in the top right hand corner of the screen are currently displayed in red.
When I’m trying to access the GPS system on my Tech2 it just displays ‘waiting for data’ and doesn’t seem to connect to anything like it would do if I was programming something else on the car – which makes me wonder if something isn’t connected somewhere?

I’m going to pull the head unit out later in the week to doublecheck that everything is connected on the rear, but any advice on other things to check?

Correct aerial and that it is plugged in. Loom runs across dash to drivers kickpanel, along the door sill trim and up the C pillar. Saloon aerial can be accessed from the brake light trim iirc, estate requires the rear of the headlining to be released enough to access it, (drivers side D pillar trim and rear trim should suffice). 

Plugs are:

Back of the cage
Driver kick panel
Estate, roof between c pillar and aerial base.
Saloon, between c pillar and aerial base.

Apart from the cage, the connectors contain gps and phone aerials as well as the radio.

I’ve just managed to find the time and the U-shaped head unit pullers and pulled the head unit out of the dash to check the connections, the GPS connection seems firm enough as does the radio socket and have also checked the connections for the GPS aerial on the roof in the rear and they are still wrapped in the OEM foam to protect them so they obviously haven’t been fiddled with.

Will check any wiring in the drivers kick panel now, have also plugged in the Tech2 and it doesn’t seem to be picking up any thing to do with GPS under the GPS section so not quite sure what is going on

Not sure it'll help, but when my satnav packed up it turned out to be a duff crimp connection in the connector between the loom and the antenna in the head lining. The result was an intermittent short between the core and the braid of the coax. The connectors were all still covered in that foam spongey stuff, and hadn't been disturbed since the car left the factory as far as I could see.

It's worth disconnecting the satnav cable in the drivers side footwell and buzz checking between the centre pin and the braid. If it's dead short then the fault is either in the wiring to the antenna or the antenna itself.

Now fixed! Seems the joint in the drivers footwell behind the kickpanel was loose! Tightened it up and bobs your uncle! 

Just need to get it to keep the nav disc in now and not keep ejecting it!

Iirc, for testing purposes you should be able to play a music CD in the nav slot to cheeck it works ok. 
My memory is pretty shit though.

I can confirm that the nav slot plays music cd’s perfectly

Good. Just need a good disc then.

Sometimes, polishing the disc may help if music CDs play fine, but very often its a sign the laser is starting to fail.  Sometimes its also due to quite a lot of humidity in the car, esp if it seems to improve after the car has done a few miles and the cabin has circulated air through a bit.

Additionally, CDRs are known to knacker the lasers, but sometimes you may find a CDR works better than a real CD...   ...until it shags the laser.

All good news then, I know I’m flogging a dead horse as the navi system is so out of date but it would be nice just to get it working nevertheless.

I was the same with mine. Had to change to a colour screen and have it working, coz if its fitted it should work.
As you know Im out in the sticks, where no new roads have ben built since Victoria was on the throne. So its probably perfectly accurate around here.

You can still buy the NavDisc but it'd be cheaper to buy another car...

Spent ages and a fair few quid getting mine to work properly with the added help of TB and several trips to Brackley .

Rarely use it and even with the last 2011 disc it is surprising how accurate it can be despite many roads not being on it now.

Like others my logic is if it has it and it can work...then why not get it fixed ...although it has recently started squirting the disc out again when first started in the mornings so expect moisture is forming on disc ....or laser is starting to get tired.
