Front wheel play side to side
« on: 26 July 2014, 19:47:23 »

Hi guys, can someone advise on likely cause of this.

Had a slight noise from front end that went away when I braked, thought it was something to do with the brakes so jacked the car up and checked the front NS wheel. No play up and down but movement side to side. Could see the track rod moving when moving the wheel. Now I know the steering idler needs replacing, I've got that but not had a chance to change it as my jack seized up on me, that'll teach me to leave it out in the rain  ::)

Could it be that or could it be something worse?

Any advice you can offer would be appreciated  :y

Yes or track rod ends.. play in it.. needing replacement..
While moving the wheel cup the ends in your hand and feel the knock and wobbling. . If there is any. Thats the thing to replace. . Hope this helps

If rocking the pas side wheel in the 3/9 o'clock position, and watching the idler through the wheel arch, the idler will visibly move up and down if there is play.

And as said, track rod ends will also give play in that same plane, and grabbing each ball joint in turn by hand is a good way to confirm the play, as you'll feel it. :y

Check wishbone ball joint, as well though. I find just reaching under with the car on the floor and wiggling the wishbone up and down checking for play works well.
