2.2 Petrol Clutch Replacement.
« on: 31 August 2016, 15:31:08 »

So for laughs I rang my local Vauxhall Specialist, as my clutch on 2.2 is on it's last legs. There is no way I could change one myself and a fatty little admin felt it's not a job for him and garage.

So I've used this local place before just for MOT's, been happy with what they do. Failed it on rear light and emissions two weeks ago, let me take it away and fix it and come back for a free re-test. Normally they say they must use their own parts, but had no problem me fixing a few bulbs.

Firstly I was told the DMF wheel must be changed with a 2.2 clutch?  :-\ He was clear this must be done, it's only available from Vauxhall and its £609+ vat  :o

Without DMF, but saying he would not do it without. Came in at £575 all fitted.  ;D

Might as well keep driving it till clutch let's go  :(

Can anyone say that a 2.0 clutch won't work with a 2.2?

To me sounds pretty straightforward, but I've no personal experience.

I should add, after researching on here that clutch bite point is always high. But it feels extremely high these days, I still really can't get it to slip much  :-\

Is some vibration at low revs, especially when cold.  :-\

Thanks. But no thanks  :y

I'd like to change the clutch, but really does not appear cost effective.  :(

It's a very long time since I've changed a rwd clutch (1900 CIH Manta) but you're young & fit enough to do it yourself ... not especially difficult, just the weight of the gearbox balanced on your chest & knee  ;D I've only ever lined the clutch plates up by rack o' th'eye ..... just might take a bit of jiggling. Get the car on two sets of ramps and you're away  :y :y You can decide whether you want to change the DMF when you see it .... I can understand why the garage would want to change it all in one go

All told, about £450 plus about four hours labour or an easy days work on the driveway...

Easy job, about 25 bolts all told ::)

The clutch is cheap to buy, and petrol Omega DMFs don't seem to be a problem. A new concentric slave cylinder is a sensible precaution. The only hard part of the job is lifting the gearbox into place while lying on your back. If you can scrounge the use of a pit, even that ceases to be an issue.

I have never had a manual gearbox off before, really would not feel confident in that job

It's like an auto box swap, only lighter ;)

There's less to cock up. Align the clutch plate(doable by eye, but much easier with a tool) and it all bolts back together.

Really not difficult. Don't know with an Omega, but on my Manta I'd to disconnect the front of the exhaust to allow the engine/gearbox to tip down enough at the back so that it would slide off the input shaft of the gearbox before the gearbox hit the transmission tunnel.

what could possibly go wrong .......  ;D ;D
