Volvo V70 2.4 D5 Oil Leak
« on: 26 September 2019, 18:52:50 »

As above, my 2004 V70 has an oil leak which appears to be welling up around an injector.  :-\

It's 100% oil, not diesel, and as far as I can tell there is a fitting kit available with clamp and seals for about £30, which I assume will solve the problem.  I don't know anything about injectors though and have never pulled one out, but it doesn't look too difficult.  :-\

Should oil be able to leak from an injector?  ???  :-\  ::)  ;D

Injector fitting kit linky.

Am I on the right track with this?  ???   TIA!  :y

Is that the oil filter housing bottom right of picture?

No it's the filler cap.  I don't think that's leaking, as I've given the area a good clean and the oil reappears in the recess that the injector sits in.

The engine starts and runs fine BTW.  :y

I thought it looked like the 710 filler cap , did you have a little accident  ;D
could be the 710 cap seal leaking
I'd clean it all and check it's not traveling into the injector well from elsewhere

No. Unless it is an oil cooled injector, which means it would have separate oil pipes attached!!! :y

Cam cover gasket then...

No the injector sits in a recess of the cam cover, so the gasket is below that pool of oil.  ;)

As you have to remove the injectors to take the cam cover off, I guess there is a seal or o-ring that seals the hole in the cam cover that the injector sits in.

This must be what has failed.  :y

The only other place where it could come from is the inlet. Part of which you can see between the two injectors, but I'm pretty sure that is OK.  :y

My guess would be that it's coming up the threads of one of the bolts highlighted here - that top one looks particularly suspicious, and I'm also suspicious I am seeing what looks like RTV on a mating face just below and to the right of it (down in the recess) - or maybe it's dried oily gunk?

Thanks Henry.  :)

I'm also wondering if the breather is blocked, as I can clean it all up and leave it ticking over for a bit and there is no sign of leakage, but go for a short drive and that recess is full of oil again.  :-\

I've got a two and a half hour drive tonight, so if we get a momentary break in the deluge today I'll clean it all up again, especially around those bolts and see what's what in the morning.  :y

I’d agree with Dave, oil fill cap seal leaking under crankcase pressure, a good clean of the breather system may help and is free :y these diesels are a messy lot.  I had this problem when the ringlands went on my Evo it would be worse under boost doubt very much if it would be pistons on your Volvo though they’re pretty tough on diesels.

Well gave it all a good clean today, ragged it up the road and this time could clearly see that the oil is leaking from the cap.  :y

So good call Dave and Rae, many thanks!   :y

I'll give the breathers a clean tomorrow and take it from there.  :)

vauxhall do the rubber seal for the 710 cap as a spare part , it's very common item to leak on tractor juice engines  :(
I wonder if volvo do the same as a spare , or if you have to replace the cap complete

or remove the o ring seal and back it and refit ,probably cheap enough to just replace the cap  :-\
