All very interesting. There may well be some conflicts with frontlines sporting tanks but the real war will be fought in Cyberspace. In fact it is underway now.

Putin a idiot  ??? ???
Nah, Putin is the most street wise, intelligent leader out there and makes the rest of the so called democratic leaders look like mugs.
You might not like the bloke but he is giving his people what they want and is a master of playing head games with anybody he chooses.

Testing our defences  ???  He is just doing what any good leader would do by letting them practice their jobs which they do rather well.

Putin is pissed because of the European Union's quest to envelope as many countries as it can into its little club  >:(
The EU can't move any further west so it moves east into the Balkans.
When the iron curtain lowered a little, the west and NATO gave assurances that they would be NO movement east.
Because of this, Ukraine gave back most of its tastier weapons and of course its nukes which totally changed the political landscape over there for ever.
Since then, we have Latvia, Lithuania and Georgia getting into bed with the EU.

Putin's little empire is being threatened by the EU's political ambitions to swallow up as may countries as it can into one union.
This scares the shit out of Putin and he is sending a message out to the old soviet satellite states (who are still pretty raw and vulnerable) not to get too close to the European Union  ;)

A hell of a lot of people thing the cold war ended back in 1989.
Well, I believe we only won that battle because we bankrupted / starved them into coming to the table.
Now Soviet Union Russia has had 30 years to develop into a country which is very rich in natural resources and now has the knowhow to extract them reasonably efficiently so the chances of that happening is very low.

As much as i'll fight any oppser when it comes down to the name of our armed forces, the UK is weak, NATO is a joke without the good old     US of A and the USA haven't got the leaders with ball to stand up to anybody anymore.

Bottom line imo is the so called Cold War never finished, it just had a few years off to recuperate  :(

I agree with most of that, but I would be even harder on the west. We have tried to integrate East European countries into our 'community' purely to stop them turning back to Russia, not for any benefit to ourselves. Quite the opposite, we risk bankrupting ourselves because of our spiteful attitude towards Russia. There are old school Americans and, probably, Brits who will never accept Russia as part of the world community and, while we accuse Putin of being paranoid, I think there is quite a bit of that on our side too.
This battlecry of freedom and democracy doesn't hold water any more, not with me anyway. We are trying to integrate countries that we have no understanding of, culturally or economically.

In short the next few years are going to be very telling and I live in hope that our British armed forces are now given what ever they need, even at the expense of the NHS and Welfare. Putin is no Hitler, but is no fool and an ex-KGB operative; his political allegiances are clear.

We must do what we have to now, and being in Poland is an advance on 1939. By what ever means in defence of the Realm. :y :y :y

We are shrimps, minnows compared to Russia or China. Even with the best equipment and training in the world, we would be crushed in no time at all if it weren't for our American allies.
And as for this 'conventional' war speak of, it will never happen. It may start out that way, but the minute one side starts to get the upper hand, the other will pull out it's nukes. The Americans didn't even need to be getting beat to do that in the second world war but, then again, they knew there was no retaliation.
War is a dirty business and any war involving the major powers is curtains for us all.

It won't be nukes. Old hat. Why contaminate vast tracts of earth.

That was my point earlier. Man has had maybe 50 years to dream up much better ways of disbaling the enemy. Water supply poisoning? EMP on a grand scale. Some form of disease. Who knows.
