Oil Cooler or Head Gasket
« on: 16 March 2009, 22:22:02 »

Hi there, I have recently taken ownership of a 3.0 V6 Elite, which has a problem, but now I am unsure as to the cause.  The symtoms are that it is loosing coolant, the oil is full os mayo and there is steam coming out of the exhaust, which points me to the head gasket, but if the oil cooler has failed would this still produce the steam from the exhaust?  :-/

No probs with the avatar, really.  I disabled yours meantime as not everyone browses the site with a 21" flatscreen monitor.  Some use PDA's and mobile phones and so, if an avatar is oversize, it floods the screen and makes the typed script unreadable.  theer is a guide on howto resize in the guidelines, I think...

Also, a guide in the help sections to suss whether its the HG or oil cooler.  HG failure on the V6 is rare, but not unheard of....    ;)

Thanks mate, I've just had a look at the guide at the link posted by Entwood... I have already split the right hand head from the block anyway so will probably carry on and do both gaskets, I will check the oil cooler while the engine is in bits to be on the safe side.

Nope ... not a wanna be anything .. but a wanna read all the time .. and an avatar half way acrosss the screen is somewhat pointless

If I had "admin duties" in mind I'd be telling all the others whose avatars also encroach .. but I only mention it to those whose posts are obliterated.

I always thought we were here to help.. so helping someone who has an oversize avatar is not allowed ??

Yes mate I agree, just about there with getting the heads off, so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

But to be on the safe side I have just ordered a new oil cooler assembly to replace the old one, the last thing I want is to get the head gaskets done and then the cooler to fail in the not too distant future. I must admit I was supprised at how cheap it was, couldn't get it from my usual motor factors so called my local Vauxhall Dealer and got it for £103..... £118 with the VAT.  :y

Will do once they are off, it's slow work at the moment as I only have an hour at most after work to do little bits. Can't wait for the weekend when I can have a real session with it!

I think that I can safely say that the gasket has gone, finally managed to get the heads off tonight and this is what I found

as you can see the gasket on the left hand head is in a pretty bad way, and this is the state of the gasket from the right hand head

Now all I have to do is clean them up and start putting it all back together. :-/

The oil cooler will not be in until Fri so in the meantime I can take the old one out aswell.
