Hand brake release/return spring? Mot item?

Well, the H/B needs to release so yes. But it's hardly a precision part, so you must be able to find something suitable. Even if that means robbing one off your other cars.

I've seen many a spring adapted to work, however, no idea what Vx would charge, but can't imagine being the earth. How soon were you requiring it? (hoping to christ that they won't have to special order it in from Germany and t takes as long as a windscreen to get here  )

But on the bright side, the instant you walk indoors, take off the soaking clothes and break our the swarfega, the sun will break out and immediately become unseasonably brilliant and warm. This is how weather works. 


I say we vote an OOFer once every week to do a pain of a job, in the foulest of weather. The instant they're finished, the weather will go lovely - as is sod's law - and the rest of us can then rush outside and do our wishbones, idler arms, handbrake shoe change, rear bearings, cambelts in sunshine and warmth!

I nicked the nearside one with a grinder, don't ask, and have subsequently discovered that offside doesn't have one...

For the full effect, you need to make them start a job just before it gets dark so that they finish at 02:49 hours. At which point there is a power cut so a nice warm shower isn't a possibility.

Or, they are £0.27 each. But, of the two that are left in the worldwide parts system, one is in Worthing and the other was accidentally sent to Easter Island and will be another 3weeks.

Nothing a couple of paperclips won't solve

Will pick up a fittings kit from helfrods on the way home... Spring length is almost irrelevant as I will need to drill new holes in the backing plates

Option 2 is I suppose strip down, fit new/refurbed backplates, requiring new rear bearings while you're at it, but that's turning a pig of a job into a whole field full of pigs. 

At least if you did go to that level you'd know the backplates won't need looking at for another 100k+

Not going to happen... Even if I fitted new backing plates, I would still need to drill them as the holes are vanished in making clearance for the calipers...

They are handed left and right, left hand is sod to get off and I usually cut it off to save time.

They usually fall off  Not too bad putting them back on if you use a small pair of vice grips .
Make sure gloves are worn to prevent hand mutilation when you slip

It's heat treated so that the very fine hook(the key to its usefulness) stays a hook and doesn't straighten out. Unlike a tent peg or the welding rod I've used in the past. I paid less than a fiver for mine, and rarely use anything else on small springs. Saves a lot of swearing, unlike most of the other brake tools I have.

The usual method I use has been levering in a screwdriver, and pinging it out, with the associated parts flying in all directions, some never to be found again. This 'hook' of which you speak does have a certain appeal

I put some wire behind the spring, pull the ends towards me, twist them together, put a screwdriver through my loop, and pull. What is tricky is unhooking the spring from the brake lever to release the cable on the LHS. After a minute trying I cut it off.
