SLOW IDLE PROBLEM
« on: 31 January 2008, 21:28:57 »

My 2.5 V6 idles at 500rpm when warm and is fine, but every so often (very regular recently) the car shakes and goes to stall but kicks back in to stop it konking out (The same effect you get the moment you turn the A/C on), it then stabilises for about 10 seconds then tries to stall again.  However there is no electrical load doing it as everything is off including A/C.  I took it for a 100 mile run the other day and everytime I stopped at the traffic lights it would start shaking and almost stall. Apart from this the car drives perfectly (no misfires and loads of power) :(

I should think a good starting point is your Idle control valve, it lets air into the engine at idle, but regularly gets gummed up with burnt oil deposits. I'm sure you'll find a how2 here to clean and refit it.

Also worth checking all air hoses are tight and no splits.

Also clean your EGR valve with carb clean..

ps: also change your o-rings under the plenum if they are old..

Paint stripper much more effective on egr ;)

To OP, most likely causes or poor idle are ICV or some unmetered air entering.  Unmetered air tends to give a lumpy idle, so I'd initially look at cleaning ICV which may be sticking slightly.  Not harm in checking around for air leaks though ;)

Also, not directly related, but worth giving throttle bodies a good clean with carb cleaner, along with the breather system
