Ok, dropped the sub sump on the 2.5 tourer today found some O rings and a large washer in the oil pickup!!! anyone any idea where these could come from? the headgaskets and the oil cooler have been done before my ownership so i guess 'anywhere' could be athe answer..

I suspect a big end has gone but need to get the ally sump casing off to have a look, can this be done with the engine is situ?

if so is there anything i need to know?

VX have quoted me £24=Vat for a single big end bearing, can anyone reccomend a better (cheaper) source?

Try your local factors for bearings.

To remove the upper sump requires removal of the subframe and consequently the engine needs supporting

But I'm sure Mr Haynes say that big ends can be got at via the lower steel pan .......   :-/

As Mark says the engine would need to be supported. I've just looked in themanual & I was right .... again! .... the pistons & conrods and be removed with the engine in situ .... so leave the subframe wher eit is. Far too much work involve especially if it can be avoided.

hang on, so do i need to drop the subframe or not?

my brain hurts....

I can always knock up a support frame for the engine if need be, or i could just hold it up on the engine crane.....

I guess what I am most interested to hear is how 'Mr Haines' gets the oil baffle plate off with the upper sump assembly fitted!

With the lower sump off, you can only see the front half of the bottom end.....

I find Mr haynes to be a good guide. He's not normally far off, however as the last time I had a big end to change was before some of the forum members were born or they were still at school I can't comment specifically on an Omega. I was merely stating what operation it's claimed can be done wit the block in situ.
Maybe there's a market for a Russel's Reair & Service Manual  :-/

Thanks all, i was idly wondering if the o rings and the washer in the sump could have been from a collapsed lifter causing the knocking i thought was a big end?

I'd still like to check the big ends though....

No O rings and washers in the lifters/followers.
