regular checks would tell you if this is a sudden loss, or just general oil use over a ling period. When did you last top it up?

Probably when I checked it 2 months ago I can't remember

Breathers are very clear as I did them a few months ago with the cam gasket. Might check them again just to be sure though. I do an awful lot of short journeys though could This be a factor?

Only if the short journeys started at the same time as the oil use I'd say. But as somebody didn't check his oil level regularly, we'll never know, will we Ian. tut tut
