Are they taking it out of it's misery?

That would be the fairest thing to do to such a horrible thing from the 1970's! :o :o ;D ;D ;)

Did they.

The media slagged it off terribly when launched, and as for the original square steering wheel.....!! ;D ;D

Those of us driving the Fords of the day just thought they were a joke, and the last thing we wanted was one of those as a company car!  As it happened they devalued quicker than our Fords at the time, and were not considered right for the business! ;D ;D ;)

I have just retrieved this latter day assessment of the car, which reflects what we heard at the time:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/classic/austin-allegro-how-the-worst-car-of-all-time-came-to-be-made/

Although the article states something like " not too badly received at the time" by the media, it WAS slatted!  I remember all the negative comments being made on the radio, and in the car press. It was awful, and one of the big nails in the coffin for Austin, which BMC , then British Leyland later made worse with ongoing "industrial disputes" ::) ::)
 :D ;D  ;)

That takes us back to when cars were very simple.  The space around that engine was typical of the cars of the time (apart from the Mini and variants) was it not, and the 'A' series engine was lovely to work on (had one in my A40, then later, Wolsley Hornet). The interiors then, in basic cars, were very 'empty' compared to the cars of today, and even radios were luxuries, something to be added.  Cheap, basic, simple, but did the job.

But overall the Allegro....................well, give me my, brand new, Ford Escort Mk1 that I had in 1975 any day.  It was far more sexy in style, inside and especially on the outside; for me as a youngster I knew my Escort shell formed the basis for the contemporary great rally and track cars, having real street presence amoungst us all.  Remember what youngster would ever want an Allegro?  That was a poor man's dad or even grandad motor - us women of course were usually relegated to the likes of the Mini or Imp, as our brains could cope with them!! We were now breaking out into larger cars!!:o :o :o ;D ;D

The All-aggro may have been utter shite but it was still better than the woeful Marina. Even Sir Tig will agree. :)

Well of course there were Marina's and Marina's.  ::)

The 1800TC Coupe was a very different animal to the 1300 saloon.  ;)  :)

At least he Marina was rwd, and with its atrocious suspension people could learn to drive on the limit at low speed.
The greatest racing driver who ever lived learnt his craft in a Skoda Estelle, on the icy Canadian winter roads.  :)
