If the fluid hasn't got a history of being changed i would say it's always wise to do so.

It's worth carefully checking the condition of the old fluid. If it smell burnt or has any debris in it, it's likely the box is in poor condition.

Watch out for plastic bits in the front sump, as this indicates a failed thrust washer which will kill it in short order if not replaced.

Servicing the autobox works at about ..

£70=00 for 2 x 5ltrs Dex III,which can be purchased from Opie oils who have an advert on the "For Sale Section ".

You will require both the front/rear sump gaskets along with the filter screen which is easier replacing although some would wash it out in paraffin. These work out about £40=00 for the set which can be bought via ABS .

Means of getting the new oil into the sump is best with a 5ltr garden type sprayer which could be picked up for around £10-£15 so expect £120=00 to do the job properly using decent parts and oil.

If you intend doing it yourself so much easier on a garage ramp if you could beg/borrow/steal the use of 1 ,failing that its ramps on the driveway.Expect to get messy so have plenty of old carpet/rags/paper to mop up the mess and suggest you wear some old clothes as you will get dirt...be warned. ;D

Fuchs TITAN ATF 4000 Multifunctional Automatic Transmission Fluid -
"Good quality universal ATF for all Dexron III applications."
1197
5 Litres £27.78 (£23.15 ex)

Just lifted from their website...looks like it a bit cheaper than when I bought it a few weeks ago. They had a deal on 2 at about £65=00 and 1 at £35 so still considerably more than you paid at £39 for 2 x 5ltr

I had understood that Carlube was a lower quality product and as it was in effecty going into a gearbox that wouldnt be opened up again for some considerable time it was wiser to opt for the better quality.

Sure engine oil is less of an issue as its a consumable which is replaced every 4/5k anyway so basic cooling/lubricating properties are acceptable.

Above comments are just my own opinion though  ;)

Thats the stuff Halfords sell for around £20 (before trade discounts), which I have used.  No idea why, or even if its just a placebo effect, but I feel Titan 4000 is noticibly smoother in use.

Given the extra cost, and how rarely it has to be done, I tend to use Titan 4000.  Although, in an emergency, Halfords and their Comma is more convenient, hence its whats currently in the MV6 following the Newent fiasco last year ;D
