Noise on Meriva when throttle pedal touched
« on: 23 July 2016, 20:35:29 »

Toady my widowed little sister Kathleen (75) dropped in for a chat. As she was leaving she mentioned her Meriva occasionally made a 'hissy' noise, on starting, pulling away. She tried to demonstrate it, but failed. On getting home she rang me, siad it happene if she 'touched the accelerator while going along'. . Any ideas, chaps?

Engine is the Z16XEP 1.6 2OHC petrol unit. Vauxhall recommend changing the timing belt at 90000 miles or 10 years. Haynes recommends 40000 miles or 4 years. Car is 9 years old and has covered 61000 miles. With a hint of throttle it might leave the drive train slack, but the timing belt is always under load, isn't it?
I have just changed the cam belt on an Omega 2.2, and intend to do another next Wednesday - easy job. It looks trickier on the Meriva. My sister talks of getting a newer car; I am inclined to encourage her.

Any damaged inlet pipes?

Alternator bearings or the belt tensioner

If it's more of a water noise could be the matrix, my old 106 did that but never caused any problems, air leak on an inlet pipe?

Only thing more complex really is the lack of space and the need to remove the engine mount.

I've got to sort out SWMBO Panda with a full service and cam belt ready to sell it :y

The baffle in the inlet manifold can get loose on them
