Looking to replace the Zafira.
Had a wander around the local car supermarket today, and cam up with the following ideas, in choice order....
Skoda Superb
Mazda 6
Toyata Avensis
Any thoughts, or pearls of wisdom on any of these? Not got as far as researching them in depth yet, or even driving them.
All under 3 years old, and latest shapes of each.

If you must give up, at least consider an Avensis Verso. In brown.
Joking aside, a three year old Superb was probably a taxi... Scottish reg will be a big clue and will be a risk out of warranty.
The Mazda will look shiny but don't expect to get three years out of it before it needs welding.
The Avensis is probably the only sane choice of the three.
Alternatively, buy something nice for less.

When I had my Terracan rustproofed at Rustbusters in Spalding I asked in their opinion what were the best & worst cars for rust best were VW worst were Land Rover & Mazda they reckon Mazda we worse than Lancia , who had terrible problems a few years back.

Not keen on Insignia's old or new to be honest.
Dont want or need 7 seats anymore, and the interior of most of them is too 'buttoney' saw one with a decent nav screen which was less cluttered, but no, going back to car shape now really.

The C I sat in was too small, and also the engine sounded rough, but happy to try in an E class.
I like Merc's. but worry that I shouldnt ;D ;D ;D Im also concerned it would have to be older and higher mileage to be in budget

Will you DIY service? Worth considering/researching videos, I’ve been doing that.
Significant differences on just how easy they are to service and run, I initially rejected Insignia’s but after running the Zaf for a year and servicing it, I would consider one.
TD took over an hour to do pollen filter and videos suggest it’s a pig of a job, sub 5 minutes on the Zaf and Insignia, including a tea break.

Also Vauxhall one of the few left doing traditional slush boxes, none of the fancy DCT type ones.

Have a search, big differences in ease of service.
I found it difficult just to jack and axel stand the VW, the Zaf is nice and easy just like Omega.

That said, I do like my big pussy - refined, quickish (noticeably quicker that bro's similar engined S class parts bin), comfortable and well equipped. Downsides are length/size makes it cumbersome in tight spaces, and the high window line makes visibility far poorer than Omegas and other older cars. Plus although its very capable in the corners, its not a drivers car like its smaller brother, the XF.

Basic DIY service like oil and filters, actually look nice and straight forward, from of the YouTube videos I’ve looked at.
Although my 530d is 14 years older than this, it's very easy to service, as the only thing that you have to get underneath for is to drop the oil. :y

When I sold it it had around 48000 miles under it's wheels. My new XFR had only 8000 miles (now about 13000)
It was a fine car but they offered me a good P/X deal so................. :)
Having said that there wasn't a lot of logic involved. ::)

Ah...yes. Most dealer were offering around £23500 as a P/X.
Jaguar Watford offered £25000......I knew there was a 'reason' in there somewhere. :)
They then put it up for sale at £29995.

Now on sale at under £24K. Hmmmm. I think that's a lot of car for the money, although buying is only the first instalment on cars like that. For someone like me, who refuses to get his hands dirty, services, maintenance and road fund license would probably make my eyes water.
It all comes down to two things for me: How much am I willing to pay for the stupid grin on my face, and living with the frustration of never really being able to open the taps. I dropped my lad in Bradford this morning, 33 miles each way on M1 and M62. Took me best part of an hour each way. Ford anglia or 5 litre jag would have made no difference.

You have a point, up to a point......
Tyres, brakes, etc..etc... are all expensive consumables.
But....... using the Jaguar 3+ service plan it only cost £199 for a small and less than £300 for a major service.
Insurance is £300 P/A and road tax is the same as the mighty Signum......about £11 a week.
Let's not add depreciation to the cost equation because I don't 'do sensible' very well. :)

Perhaps I'm odd but I always thought your Astra estate was a good looking car. A proper engine and a less offensive colour and it could have been a keeper.

Terry the chip man borrowed one for a few months. Nice motor, but electrical gremlins are hard to sort (but less hassle than the beemer he's currently borrowed and fighting with the headlights :D). That one was the LWB version and was just too bloody big :D.

I've seen a few and I like them. Cheap to buy but as TB says......they are huge.

We had one as a rental from enterprise for a week or so ,it was diesel , but fully loaded with all sorts of toys and was actually very nice to drive ,fantastic on the motorway , very tourquey went like stink(it was a rental!!!), but yes quite impressive.

Zafira, its approaching 150k now, and wants quite a bit spending on it both to get it as I want it, and to pass the next mot. Think the time has come.

At 150K it owes you nowt. As you say, time to say goodbye. Don't overthink it, most modern cars will give you what you want.

Fair comment. There's precious little around 2nd hand that would enthuse me to part with that much cash at the moment.
I think I'd just chuck £5-6k at something boring and lowish mileage that will absorb some commuting miles and call it "white goods". :-\

Yup, in view of the fact that there is 3 parts of buggerall that's even remotely desirable, I'd do similar. Or run the worthless Zaffy until it stopped, then pick up another mongrel shitbox with 12months ticket, in the hope something eventually comes along.... ….but don't hold your breath.

can't think why I didn't suggest these earlier[especially as I own one ::)]what about Volvo V70 or XC[cross country all wheel drive version]70 or if they were out early enough the V90? Incredibly capable machines and pretty near a match for the Omega comfort wise if mine is anything to go by :y

The Superbs are a good car, the Toyotas are about as interesting as Stemo's slippers.....
But then you know I would be hunting out an XF Sportbrake to get correct wheel drive.
Never been impressed with the non AWD Audi's, the handling is pretty poor and under steer bad.
I now where there will be an F-Pace going soon but, somewhat out of budget ;)

Not seen a Jag estate fitting the bill yet, either getting on a bit, or intergallactic milage.
Keep thinking do I REALLY need an estate, but am sure i'd regret it if I didnt have one.
BE aware then that it ill need 4 tyres at a time due to the AWD setup used (true of most AWD setups), which gets quite pricey!

The omega is going nowhere. And I don’t want to spend upwards of a grand on the zafira. I’ve a budget and am prepared to spend it.

The W212 wears miles infinitely better than the W210/211. I put 30k on mine in 8 months with only a ball joint, tyres, brake pads and servicing. ;)
Full memory seats is something worth seeking out as they are relatively rare, but make a real difference to comfort levels...

It might not have the handling finesse of a rear wheel car and they might be boring as opps but as a mode of transport, it does a great job with very little fuss.

Jags are nice to drive but were can you really REALLY DRIVE one with the road network the way it is ?
Seriously i'd buy a domestic appliance which would save me overall and not give me grief for the mundane tasks and spend a couple of grand on a 2 seater sports car which once the kids have been dumped somewhere safe you could head for the hills so to speak and enjoy driving :y :y

Chap in my team has E250 CDI on a 14 or 15 plate I think, he borrowed my code reader as had fault light. Turns out Nox sensor was on the blink, Merc dealer confirmed this.
They emptied his wallet fixed it for him, at a cost of £650.
For one sensor :o

I was lost ::) .... and the C4 had just two screens, one in the middle & one for the speedo in front of the driver. How little effort was required to dream that up?

So much potential-but usually costly to bring to market-Traction Avant,DS and even the ever so humble 2CV were all innovative for their time.Trouble was that particularly with the DS people feared what was not familiar plus of course it never got the engine it truly deserved and had to make do with a carry over of the Traction Avants motor.

MB don't design anything any more, and haven't for 20yrs. There go through various parts catalogues, choose a load of random bits to put on a wishlist, then try to throw them into a car.
But because they do it regularly (as it makes car design cheap), you do get the latest ideas, more than enough to make your average MB purchaser happy, but ultimately still end up with a poor vehicle underneath.

Dad had one when we were little. That thing would go anywhere, and could lug a huge amount - when we came back from Cyprus, we took the long road touring Europe for a few weeks, 11 of us shared between a DS Safari and a Fiat 850 Sport Coupe.
It wasn't without its "citroen ideas" that didn't quite work out.... ….I remember a time when we'd stopped at the pub on the way to Grandmas, and upon restarting, the starter motor was toast (it was French, after all). Never mind, Citroen supplied a starting handle :y. Only with the engine not running, the suspension was too low to turn the handle without hitting the ground ;D

Superb & XF are still up there, the XF in particular is a far better proposition if I don't go for an estate as their design is 2-3 years behind the saloon, and part of that makes it very hard to find the right one that would tick my boxes.

I think Skoda Superb would be high up on my list as well, just £6k gets you a decent spec, sub 80k miles and DSG. Although I would have some concerns around that, changing the fluid looks a faff as well, stripping airbox and battery, battery floor etc, just to reach the filter. Filling it as well, is no picnic.
VCDS is a big plus as well, it so easily gives all data/programming/scanning needs.

Diags would not be a deciding factor on any car I was going to buy. TBH, you can get half decent diags equipment on virtually any brand for sub £300... ...and for those reprogramming to accommodate new modules, that's why the dear Lord invented the £20 bung ;)
For eg, everyone here knows I have a pretty comprehensive GM diags capability. But I can't see me having another GM vehicle any time soon.

I'd seek out the 170bhp "whisper" variant of the 2.0 diesel, in Elite trim. Probably an Estate as well.

Like anything they just need proper servicing, change every 40k as suggested and sure it will fine. Been researching DIY changes myself, it’s actually a reasonable ish job now I’ve watched a few.
Not sure how much oil is, but Skoda themselves charge £180 for a fluid and filter change, which is not that bad.

Like anything they just need proper servicing, change every 40k as suggested and sure it will fine. Been researching DIY changes myself, it’s actually a reasonable ish job now I’ve watched a few.
Not sure how much oil is, but Skoda themselves charge £180 for a fluid and filter change, which is not that bad.
Lots of people would baulk at £150, but lots of people expect their cars to go forever without maintenance costs. 0.375pence per mile ;D
It’s actually better than I thought, by a considerable margin. Oil looks to be £50 at least, for a decent brand.

Honestly, I'd go for the newer generation - everything is a great deal better and (subjective, of course) I think they look a lot better, too. Only downside being that the 190 has a tank of pee you have to fill every 7,000 miles (the 150 doesn't).

I've been using my mother's 1.0l Focus the last few days and that's made me realise that the mk1 that she had before wasn't as bad as I thought it was!
The interior is even uglier, using cheap feeling materials and there is a huge amount of wasted space. There is no performance, although it does seem to hold speed once it's finally got there. The complete lack of any engine braking makes me suspect that this is due to a massive flywheel, but even that can't disguise the triple's vibration. The driving position and ergonomics are dreadful, and visibility is worse. It does ride better, and the boot is actually worth opening if you need to put anything in it.

Its a 13L tank in the superb, Adblue is about 90p/L on Amazon inc delivery (for a brand I recognise) - not sure how much from everywhere else. Skoda reckons max normal usage is 1L per 400 (ish) miles. So less than 0.25p/mile spend :y

AdBlue is £8.60 for 10 litres trade from Halfords.
The XF seems to run forever on ten litres, the F-Pace gets through 10 litres in about 7000 miles.
There is a VAG build period where they guzzle it as one of the quick fix SW updates for the NOx scandal was to shovel more AdBlue through

Very nice. My neighbour has one the same as that on a 65 plate. He's had it from new and he's never mentioned having any grief with it. I've been looking myself recently and narrowed it down to a late Skoda Superb or a Transit Custom double cab. :)

The old E63 was 6.3 litres........which was reduced to 5.5 litres, but now an E63 is just 4 litres.

Insurance shouldn't be an issue at your age unless you live in a postcode that is always on fire. The Tata only costs £300 to insure.
Of course, if it does go wrong, it won't be cheap to fix. :)

E250 is diesel. Practically every single one is diesel bar hybrid or insane AMG full fat ones.

That depends on who/what you want to carry in it. My Smart is no good for carrying SWMBO & my grand daughter & the dog & stuff to go to the beach with ;D
My Smart & R Class both have a similar power to weight ratio ..... 84bhp and 850kg compared with 224bhp & 2200kg :y :y

To drive, the Smart probably feels nippier, but in a drag race, the R Class will wipe the floor with it...

Agreed. And the R Class has twice the transmission gear. The Smart is pretty good off the line but runs out of steam fairly early. And at motorway speeds you really do want to be in the R Class rather than the Smart (in all honesty, I'd prefer the Omega at anything much over motorways speeds as you do notice that the R Class is top heavy when 'pressing on')
And the Roadster will wipe the floor with most things on a twisty A/B road as it just goes round corners like on rails ;D ;D

My 163bhp astra diesel has plenty of low down grunt and will accelerate from 60 to 80/90 very quickly, so motorways are not a problem. On the other roads I drive on, I very seldom get the chance to overtake but, when I do, it's adequate.

The old Zafira, one of the more powerful at 150bhp was ok for me in all honesty, I do mostly A road driving, and quite twisty ones at that, so being being able to quickly and safely get past trucks and tractors in small opportunities is a must. I didn't want stupid speeds in my next one, but ideally a little quicker. That said, I do seem to have bought one which is more of an improvement than I needed too :D.

I'd be interested to hear how you compare the 3.2 and E250 performance, both give around 200bhp, but the Merc will have more torque.
I like the effortless performance of my 3.2, be good to to see if the E250 is similar.
Given like STEMO and yourself I'm happy with the 163bhp Tourer's performance.

The Trolley goes well enough but gets quite thrashy over 80 or so... but handles better than the looks might suggest.
Be interesting to see how its stablemate goes and handles ;)

Have you ever seen those car customizing programmes on TV.... where the donor car has it's original engine and gearbox destroyed by full throttle antics in the car park before it's wheeled in to the workshop and crafted into something new with lots of chrome and a big V8?... Well it's similar to Brackley when TB can finally find where he left the battlebus.
