Franco Zeffirelli, composer and film director. 96 is a good innings.

Yes indeed, a great director and amoungst his greatest films was Taming of the Shrew with the delicious bad Welsh boy Richard Burton and his real life lover, Elizabeth Taylor. Unforgettable 8)

RIP Franco.

And, of course, dependent on your Wi-fi speed and quality.

Ah, that is interesting. My BT fibre optic, well to the green box in the street, meets all the speed checks I have done and for me in practical terms is usually as fast as I need, and is supersonic compared to how fast my iPad loads!

So, could it be the internet speed to the iPad that stops it from working well with big internet sites, or, as said, my iPad (yes, it is years old!) basically past it?

Time for a new iPad perhaps, as it looks as though I am keeping my (still non-Bluetooth) Desktop PC! :D

I am seriously looking at upgrading my PC so it has Bluetooth built in. ;)
Which might not necessarily resolve the problem....

Maybe, but I would then know I have an up to date, fully loaded, PC that is not prehistoric in your techie terms (that is now just over 5 years old!!). ;D ;D ;)
Well, as I've said before, my usual laptop and main desktop were both purchased in 2007, so 12yrs old.  You don't need latest and greatest for general use.

I am gobsmacked TB!! I assumed, obviously wrongly, that you as a full professional techie would slag off any computer so old, which even to a novice like me, is, well, prehistoric! And you have one! :o :o :o

We live and learn 8) 8) Thanks TB you have just saved me hundreds of pounds  :-* :-* :y

I think in this case, the drivers age was taken into consideration. being a young lad working for a dubious employer.

Had it been an experienced driver, the situation would have never arrived.

He was 20, so a man.  Do you really believe that anyone who has killed 4 people when driving an HGV can be cleared of all charges just because they are 20, if the facts of the legal case are such that he in fact considered reasonably guilty of driving a mechanically unroadworthy vehicle ??? ???
Tilda is, iirc, an HGV mechanic so I would defer to his expertise/opinion. :-X

Besides, as a new driver, the chap wouldn't have had the experience or knowledge to deal with that scenario in a car, let alone a truck and especially not one found to have been woefully maintained... ::)

Back on track, Entwoods' findings from yesterday should serve as reason enough to pay more attention to rechecking (or even routine checking of) wheel nuts, even if you don't entirely agree with the concept ;)

Sorry, but explain how even an experienced HGV mechanic ( the one who 'maintained' that was one of those), that I do give all due respect to, be an expert in law? :o ::)

In addition when has ignorance or young age stopped a full prosecution when others have been killed with a conviction and heavy penalty when that person has been a driver, especially of an HGV that carries additional responsibility ? ::)

I'm beginning to wonder if anyone has bothered to look at the UN report I linked  to.  ::)

I did so Tigger, and it makes all the points being echoed by the scientific community in general, and we are witnessing in how this World's climate is changing. Various reasons are the cause of this, such as the natural processes of life on Earth.

However, certain individuals, such as Rod who has some political agenda and is claiming conspiracies, dictatorship, mis-information, let alone absolute censorship by all the main political parties everywhere, let alone news agencies like the BBC  in everything, has ridiculed those of us who are taking note of serious commentary right across the Globe as though we are fools and acting like sheep, completely ignores the facts that show man's activity is dragging us all down. Common sense, let alone intelligence drives people like me and I think most of you to believe it would be best that we change our ways, which regardless of the arguments makes sense and is logical to us without some political drum to beat.

But Rod, old fella, do you really think the age of coal should return? Do you think the Clean Air Act of 1956 should be abolished as the reasons for it were, and still are, political manipulation and is not necessary.  Did you never see the smogs in London, did you never end up with soot all over your body that your mum had to wipe off?  Did you not suffer from respiratory issues due to the pollution in the air?  Do you still think that men should still go down into sweaty, highly dangerous, and hot mines, contracting serious illness as a result, to provide a fossil fuel that all noteworthy scientists knows kills humans and destroys the environment? Do you not believe in cutting health endangering fossil fuel pollution and giving our children a cleaner, safer, and brighter future, or should our cars still push out the emissions that were prevalent in the UK major cities in the 1950's? Perhaps even smoking tobacco products is not dangerous to our health as the medical, scientific, and political have claimed and are,  as we are so stupid that we have allowed ourselves to be dictated to by ' the politicians', and we, the working classes, should just carryon killing ourselves for the profits of a few as it all is an illusion?!

For such an obviously intelligent man you certainly can come out with some crap at times, and then insult the majority on here, as you have in this post, as we know nothing!

For God's sake just go back to attacking Russia and Putin, oh, and everyone else with a different political viewpoint than you ::) ::) ;)

This thread reminds me of the POS picasso clutch issue about a year ago (discussed on OOF)
I remember there being warnings on the clutch cowboys invoice about returning @ 500 miles to have the clutch checked and again @ 1500 IIRC
Fortunately ,for the case , the gearbox parted company with the engine  :o within the 500 miles and was returned, it went back twice  for them to fix ,this was due to missing bolts, clearly not tightened or not fitted .due to the lack of earth path via the gearbox to the starter motor, it also fried all the ECU loom etc effectively writing off the car.I had to take photos and get an engineer's report
after months, lots of emails, phone calls etc and legal threats , the matter got resolved,
because the £760 bill for the work had been paid by credit card, the credit card company refunded the bill, plus £1000 to find a replacement vehicle, plus £500 for expenses for hire car,etc etc plus we kept the picasso and scrapped it (another £160 for the kitty) ,they then pursued the case themselves .probably got more as a final settlement  :-\ who knows, I was just happy to get rid of the POS picasso and draw a line under it all .
I'm not a fan of buying anything on credit ,however, paying for a bill for services with a credit card, then paying in full the credit card balance at the end of the month ,paid off well in this case.
I had good evidence, photographs ,engineers report, the damaged car etc ,and could have pursued the case via small claims and I expected to win, BUT was happy to let the credit card company factor the debt and deal with it ,because it takes a lot of time/hassle to  deal with .

In Mr Varche's case, I'd hope to be refunded the cost of replacement wheel, tyre, hub and wheel nuts and fitting , plus a token gesture (say £50  :-\ ) and leave it at that.

Indeed don't Dave, that should be the satisfactory conclusion and no doubt Varche is pushing for that.

However, we all know what the motor industry is like, even and especially with main dealers. Therefore Varche may have to resort to my favourite starter for ten, The Consumer Rights Act 2015 ::) :D :y

The confusion may have been caused by the Iranian statement that the tankers were carrying Japanese related cargo-as far as I know no-one claimed they were Japanese vessels. The Japanese despite the sanctions do export oil to Iran.

Once more that "Japanese" link occurs! :o :o

Holding my hands up here I have never re-checked the tightness of wheel nuts/bolts on any car I've ever owned. Not once have I had a wheel wobble or fall off :-X

That is it Baza. There are two lines of thought on this thread. One is yours that is the same as mine, our experiences do not suggest this is a general problem, but one maybe due completely to the negligence of the tyre fitter and/or the materials used. As I stated before, but I do not know if you can say the same, I and my business colleagues did 100's of thousands of miles in relatively short periods of time, and like me clocked up 1,000,000 miles, often at high speeds. They and I NEVER experienced a wheel coming off, or anything like it. I was never aware of anyone else having that problem either. Like you I have NEVER checked my wheel bolts.

Now the second line of thought, which I would be a fool to ignore, claims that this is a common problem if you do not check your wheel bolts after a tyre change, or as a matter of routine. However, there seems to be a suggestion that those examples are of situations where the materials - the bolts- used are sub-standard, the air guns used have not, for whatever reason worked correctly, or simply down to negligent actions by the mechanic or fitter involved.

I have of course been coming at this from the legal angle for the benefit of Varche's case and making the point that if the driver is not the one to fit the wheel and a third party is, especially a professional and supposedly competent person to undertake such work, then the legal responisibilty for any misfortunes that arise is with them.  It is not REASONABLE for a driver, such as an 80 year old or indeed of any age, to be expected to have the ability or indeed knowledge to undertake checks after someone who is meant to be qualified to undertake such work, and receives reward for doing so, has done so. Any disclaimer by the garage is therefore subject to legal challenge.

If it led to the extinction of cows[worst case scenario I know] would we then move onto pigs/sheep/goats in the name of methane emmisions/climate change? Then what? Just think of all the methane emitted by the ever growing population of the human species-TBs cull in full flow?

Just go on to eating locusts and their like Baza! ::) ;D ;D ;)

« on: 14 June 2019, 20:12:40 »
The fact that these tankers were Japanese strikes me as a very interesting factor. Could be coincidence of course, but the Japanese Prime Minister has made a point of meeting up with the Iranian leader, to request they stop all nuclear development, and wants a meeting with Kim Jon to pursued N. Korea to stop nuclear development, whilst re-itterating the close ties to the USA with the Trump visit who trying also to stop those countries developing nuclear weapons. Interesting.

All players in place, so light the fuse?  By whom, and why we may never know, with even Putin setting up this game to create an international incident in that part of the World to suit his intentions and play against the USA.  ???

Complicated conjecture yes, diplomatically a possibility, well yes, and remember how 'The Players' of the time all did not work together diplomatically, when they were wanting a fight, after the shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the excuse to start WW1.
Wasn.t one of them Norwegian?  :-\

Yes it now turns out one is, but it was stated yesterday that both were Japanese.

Now, why it was first reported as it was is a question in itself, that any conspiracy theorist could read much into. Was it fake news as Trump would claim, a deliberate error to link the Japanese Prime Minister with the attack as he is going through a programme of meeting up with the key players in those parts over nuclear weapons (who has asked him to do that, for what reason??) or simply human "error"???

We may never know, or perhaps we will! ;)

Going back in history just remember the attack on Pearl Harbour; there are a few historians who claim to have proved BOTH Winston Churchill and the American President KNEW in advance that the Japanese attacks was going to happen at Pearl, but for very obvious political reasons they let it happen. So, what Trump knows, what has actually happened, and who is involved, is a question that should be met with an open mind. History may well give us the answers in the future! :D ;)

Boris is going to be the PM this time next month. I still don't know if I will vote for him, as I don't know who his opponent will be, but It wont make any difference. He,s a shoe in.

It's hard not to like Boris
.

He makes  his own entertainment  as he crashes through life like a boisterous 6 year old with learning difficulties and ADHD.

He is a 'character' where  Jeremy Hunt by comparison is a sterile lifeless individual. :-\

Personally, I think the job of PM will prove 'too big' for good old  BOJO....... :-\ Apparently he has the attention span of a goldfish. :)

It's hard to understand the appeal of Boris: a man who has wheedled his way into far too many chances and blown everyone of them.

I totally agree with that! :y :y

Boris would/will be a total disaster for not only country (will the country elect him during this process?;'NO! Which is another democratic failure >:( >:( :() but also for the Conservaties.

I, a committed right winger, most of the time outside of my Socialist traits, will not vote for the Conservates again all the time that, Bufoon is leading them. >:(

I was listening to an Islamic leader within the Conservative Party earlier and he was making a very clear point that Muslims within the party will not vote Conservative all the time he is the leader of the party.  He stated emphaticall that he had proved he cannot be trusted!  How bloody true, regardless of the religious point of view :y :y
