Glad you got it sorted - and avoided having to get a new sensor be it cam or crank!

On the Cavalier, the EML light would be on.  I can not tell you what the code was as I do not have a code reader :(.

However, the car would drive just like you have described - with a restricter or, like in the old days of points, as it the points were out of adjustment.

On occasions, the light would go off for a while and normal driveability would be resumed.  Some times, you could start the car, and the light would go off, only for it to come on half way through the journey.

From what you describe, it would appear to be the cam sensor.  The old pre-modified ones were certainly very fragile - I remember doing something as simple as wiping the top of the rocker cover and this caused the sensor to fail.

Since the modified item has been fitted, all has been, touch wood, well.

If you are going to replace it - and it is a job you can do yourself - make sure you get the modified sensor.  You will have to cut the old connector off the loom and solder the new connector that comes with the sensor to the original loom though.

I am not totally sure, but I think that the crank sensor as at the flywheel end of the crank - it is not near the oil filter that I can say.

The connector on top of the engine is the cam sensor.  These are a known weakness and there is a modified sensor.  I have had around 4 fitted to my Cavalier over the years!

Hope this helps and good luck

Omega General Help / Re: air con compressor

I am pretty certain that the clutch on the compressor can be changed in situ.  Now, the question is, can you find somewhere that would be willing to do so?

OK,

Cheers for the info - I will probably go for one of the draper units.  For thing is for sure, I will modify the croc clip connection and make up some form of in line connetion system with fly leads permanently attached to the battery for ease of connection / disconnection.

Thanks again

I don't trickle charge the batteries though as I am too lazy to reset the radio

There's no need to disconnect the battery if you're using a well behaved trickle charger. It's only charging at higher rates with crude battery chargers that is likely to harm the car's electronics.

Kevin

Which charger do you use?  Car Mechanics did an article on battery chargers a few issues ago.  I raised the subject of trickle charging whilst connected to the car and the general consensus of opinion was not to.

As I would like to be able to trickle charge which ever car I am not using, I would still be quite keen to follow this up.

How often do you use your 2.2 Tunnie?

Alternator...i dont think....i think at the mo its just lack of use...

Well at the moment, not very much... i only took it for a run today cause i knew it won't get used for another 2 weeks.

Usually its fine on day to day use, and left for say a week at a time.

I left it for a week while i brought the Senny down to London, came back and it started fine. I went to Slough last week, only just started and it had only been left about a week, again another week and its dead... so something is taking a slow drain.

Be interesting to see if the Senator starts when i get back, that would have been left around 4 maybe 5 weeks.

I have the same with either car I leave standing for a couple of weeks or more.  Both cars have virtually brand new batteries on them.  I now swap them around more frequently.  I agree with what crowman has said.  I don't trickle charge the batteries though as I am too lazy to reset the radio, clock etc when the battery is reconnected.  I just take the car for a good run which usually sorts it (and does the car good at the same time).

The only multimeter I have is a rubbish cheapo-crap-o one, think a trip to TheBoys might be needed when i go home!  ::)

Tunnie,

I have quite a few decent multimeters that I never use.  You are welcome to one if you want one.  You will need to get the test leads, but these are easily (and cheaply) obtainable from Maplin.

Omega General Help / Re: Battery is nackered
« on: 14 March 2007, 13:06:17 »
The green dot on the both batteries fitted to my cars is not showing.  Using the "magic eye" as an indicator, it is when it turns yellow that the battery is knackered (or so they say).

It will take a surprising amount of running around for the battery to become fully charged again using the charge for the alternator.  In my Cavalier the green dot was black and it turned over very slowly and just about started.  This was at the beginning of the year and I was going to Birmingham twice a week.  The point of all this is that it took 2 weeks of this for the green dot to return.

I agree with what others have said - alternator output could well be low, but if the battery is discharged you are going to need a lot of long runs to fully charge it - even more so if the alternator output is low.

Check out the alternator and rectify this (if needed) and then charge the battery on the bench.

Hope this helps.

Personal preference: don't use flushing agents, just a good few oil changes...

Agreed - this is exactly what I always do.

I would NOT under ANY accounts buy this car.

Not because I suspect anything is wrong with it, but because if the owner is so lazy in his writing of the Ad, how lazy has he been in caring for the car??

"no pay pal dont no y it wont let me remove it cash on collection cheque or postal order but please note if paying this way pick up when funds have cleared thanks 4 looking "

Is it just me, being a miserable old git (at the age of 23!) ... I DETEST the awful shortening of words like this, it's shameful for adults to write in such a way..

No it is not just you, I am 32 and fully agree.  It is disgraceful.  I always smile at some of the spellings and general grammar on e-bay.  If a person cannot spell, it does not take a minute to run your ad through word or similar and use the spell checker there.  The amount of people that get there and their mixed up, along with to and too.

Rant over!!

The V6 is a good reliable unit if it is maintained properly.

Most of the issues are down to lack of previous maintenance/incompetence(see many Vx "technicians").

Buy the right car (eg Marks if he ever decides to sell!  ;D) and follow the correct service schedule and you should have a good reliable car. :)

As for difficult to work on? Not at all. There are some things that are awkward but you won't find a better support network for an owner than this place. :)

Agreed 110%  :)

Cold weather pack? What else was included in it?
Wooly hat & gloves.

 ;D ;D ;D Nice!

Seriously, I can only remember the Weather Pack being offered early on in the Omega production run.  I think is was termed as the Weather Pack and included Heated Seats and Front Fogs.  People with better knowledge of such things will no doubt correct this if incorrect!

The purpose of the Aux coolant pump is to keep warm coolant passing through the heater matrix when the engine is switched off meaning that you do not have to run the engine to stay warm in the car whilst stopped.
