Sourcing new engine for 2.2 4cyl
« on: 24 March 2009, 14:03:10 »

Hi,

Can anybody give me some advice as to where is a good place to get a new engine?

Head gasket is gone (done all checks and had confirmed by several people) and my mate who will do the work for me has suggested that it might be quicker/easier/cheaper to drop a new lump in.

I'm in the Oxford/Banbury area.

Cheers!

I think your mate is mis-informing you! Half a day for a H/G on a 4 pot if that!

Throw in a new waterpump and cambelt kit. About £230-250 all in. :y

Absolutlely, why take a known engine and bin it in favour of a second hand one with unknown history and issues.....plus you need to re-gas the aircon after!

Only if required.

Often, if its the head gasket that has rotted due to poor coolant sevicing then the head will be flat, they only tend to warp if they over heat.

Ok .... back to Plan A then!

Vauxhall Dealership quoted me circa £650 and two local mechanics came in at £700-800 for HG replacement and skimmed head.

My mate will be a lot cheaper, but just wanted to see what the advice would be on dropping new engine in.

Cheers  :)

Well you will need:

Cam cover gaskets - Genuine only
Exhaust manifold gasket - genuine only
Head bolts (good pattern items will do)
Cam shaft seal -  you can re-use the old ones
Inlet gasket -  Pattern is fine or genuine as not to expensive
Oil
Filter
Anti freeze

Possibly cam belt and water pump

If you have to skim the head then its costs about 30 quid.

I would add 'Genuine red Vx' anti-freeze to that from experience....
