Prop shaft gaitor ruber split
« on: 06 July 2018, 11:41:03 »

2003 manual box. The gator rubber on the prop-shaft that is up behind the heat shield where the handbrake cable runs has a split in it. Whats involved to replace it?

I was thinking about trying to repair it somehow.  :-\

Couln't see any signs of grease. Is it a sealed bearing in there and the gaitor is just to keep the dust out?
If yes is it alright to just tape over the top to keep dust out?

Taken a photo of the gaiter.

Is there anyway to repair this without taking the pro off?

Nope.

Best bet is to undo the prop at both ends, then the centre bearing and pull it from the car complete... The two halves simply slot together, but get the key spline in the wrong place and it will jam and not fit the car...

New centre bearing and donuts whilst it's off and call it done :y

You can buy generic gators which are split down the side and you glue them back together. Whilst this seems like an ideal solution, it isn't and you'll be re-visiting it far too soon.

Those splines are inclined to rust solid and prove hard to separate. I had the central bearing rubber bush fail, then it banged when I applied power so that had to be corrected. That splined joint moves little, if at all, in normal use. I should be inclined to leave it alone.

I wouldn't fancy trying to get that exhaust off in one piece either. Those centre bearing support bolts look brand new - what's the story?

I've broken 12 or so manual cars and the gaiters are always split, none of the cars have had a driving issue so I'd be inclined to just leave it alone  :y

Did have the clutch done twice due to the garage putting in the wrong clutch in the first time about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago. Might explain about the bolts. Never took any notice when looking at the photos. Shame they didn't mention the gaiter rubber at the time. Would of had it changed.

I'll leave it like it is then.  :y

Might try some self amalgamating tape around it, just to seal it.
