Insurance Renewal - Putting the Pressure On
« on: 23 January 2019, 11:14:22 »

I received my insurance renewal quote from the AA; Comprehensive, £150 compulsory excess, £50 voluntary, full legal protection, etc, etc,, all singing and dancing defaqto 5 star policy that I normal have, gone up to £647 from £535!!

So, once more I go into "negotiation" mode.  Speak to AA and after putting on the pressure of "going elsewhere" got down to £450.  Still not low enough for my liking, so stage two of negotiations then brought in price comparison quotes, with the best from Saga, with all the same benefits as with the AA / Ageas, at £380.  Phoned AA this morning and stated I wanted to move on with Saga, After being told they did not want to lose such a long term member of the AA they got it down to £379!  Just over £1 per day over the year 8) :y

Happy with that and sticking with an insurer who I know will look after me if the worst happens, and accept that my Omega cannot be easily replaced as back in 2017!!  But why do we have to go through this continual fight to get a reasonably priced policy for our Omega's? ::) ::) ;)

I think you're quite lucky to get it down that much with a big fat claim not so long ago.

So do I really, but these companies still want our continuing business and the price comparison sites have aided the consumer who is keen to go into negotiation mode 8) :y

I check the comparison sites every year ,
the insurer who I was with for my carlton (£175) wanted £650 to swap to the omega  :o
I'm now with the AA @ £249 p/a but told them to stick the recovery/breakdown U.T.A at another £170 and just got Autoaid @ £48 ish

Finding another low mile Omega that is not a rusty basket case would probably be quite hard work though ,if i had to claim  :-\

I paid £239 to insure 5 litres of creamy supercharged goodness. They also gave me a £20 petrol voucher for Texaco.......so £219 really. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

And that is when you provide the pressure to for the insurance company to come up with the financial offer to rebuild the damaged Omega as I did to get it back on the road. :D ;)

I wish Opti!! :-* :-* ;D ;D ;)

But no 18 year old would get a premium for anything like that price for covering, with a full 5 star defaqto policy, with legal cover etc., a 3.2 Omega, or any other car.

Yes, if you cut off certain benefits that I get with my policies, you can always find cheaper quotes.  But watch what happens when you have to claim.  Especially when the cost for an accident like mine was £5,022, the majority of which covering the cost of repairing my poor car. :D ;)

And the rest... Headlights, radiator, bonnet, slam panel, crash bar...

Cat C/D all day long... ::)

Same repair on mine cost about £1,200 with some careful shopping around including paint and VX fitting the new slam panel.

My indentical car costs approx.£150 per year, fully comp, protected no claims, low excess etc...….
Try Aviva through a Topcashback or Quidco to get £50 cashback.
If you renew with the same company every year, you will pay through the nose.  ;)

Not on modern cars Opti! :D ;)

On our cars just a sneeze to the front (at 15mph in my case) takes out the bumper and surrounding area.  As DG correctly states, that included bonnet, front chassis structure, headlights, one of the two cooling fans, with a complete respray of the front end to match to VX standards by an independant car body building specialist, who eventually be given the work to do the rear end of the car (but NOT after an accident!! :o ::) ;D ) to include the arches. ;)

I'm surprised the insurance company didn't write it off. :'(

Surely no Omega is worth £5000.

I'm sure they tried to write it off, Opti. But, legally, insurance should put you back to where you were originally, and I'm sure Lizzie pointed this out.

Oh yes, I certainly did Steve, and emphasised how they could either pay me £4,000 for the value of such a rare example, find me another one at the same mileage and condition or fully repair!  They chose the latter;D ;D ;)

The quote I have for them is either their "Regular" policy, which does not include all the benefits I get with my AA / Ageas policy; £498, or £579 for the policy that is identical, although with both Aviva quotes it was £500 excess, whereas I have £150 excess. ;)

You see everyone will get different quotes dependant on where they live, how the car is used, where it is kept etc, etc.  You cannot just do a comparison on the basis as having the "identical car" ;)

The AA are not an insurer, only a broker.

TBE, a 2003 3.2 Elite Auto, I think is about £230 this year, FC, 20k pa, not garaged, full business use by me and Mrs TB, and declared mods - LPG, bodykit, wheels, exhaust etc.

I think we pay about £300 each for our astras, fully comp, wifey's for business use. Me, 17000 miles, wifey 12000. That's supposed to include a discount for having both cars plus home insurance with the same company, LV.
I'm a lazy git, but I think I should have a look around at renewal.

Yes. They load the premium by 50% and then give you a 20% discount. A ploy that works very well for them.

I know that TB, and that is why I mentioned the actual insurer, Ageas. ;)

As for your quoted price, that is not availble to me with what my policy includes and where I live, and allowing for my age and medical condition either direct or via comparison sites. ;)

Very funny Dave! :o :o ;D ;D ;)

To add though, would any of us, who is sane, cover comprehensively a 3.2 litre car driver, living in the South East for just over £1 per week as I am?

I really do doubt the quality of any motor insurance covering in such a way for about 75p per week as quoted by TB, or worse still, about 40p per week as quoted by Migv6. That 'quality' will become apparent when a claim is made and you want your Omega fully repaired. ;)

Exactly Steve :y :y :y

Live in Liverpool, London, and the other major cities, and the South East the risks are considered very high and therefore the premiums reflect that :)

I live in Essex which I doubt is classed as a low risk area. I remember two or three years ago my insurance was with Ageas, via some broker or other. I still paid under half what LZ pays.  :-\

You are obviously lucky Migv6, and as I stated I tried your insurer, Avia, and they quoted £579 for an equivalent policy I have with Ageas, but with an excess of £500, not just the £150 I have.  No idea how you have their policy for £150 with the same terms I have. So, lucky you :D :y

Are you 18 years old, Lizzie? ::)

I paid £239 to insure 5 litres of creamy supercharged goodness. They also gave me a £20 petrol voucher for Texaco.......so £219 really. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

To add though, would any of us, who is sane, cover comprehensively a 3.2 litre car driver, living in the South East for just over £1 per week as I am?

£52? Now that is cheap! ;)

I really do doubt the quality of any motor insurance covering in such a way for about 75p per week as quoted by TB, or worse still, about 40p per week as quoted by Migv6. That 'quality' will become apparent when a claim is made and you want your Omega fully repaired. ;)
You're only paying £52 a year. Wow. That is cheap.  Mind you, I know I'm paying more than 75p a week.  Nearer 75p a day.

And I have made a claim with my insurer.  Other than the usual attempt to wiggle out at the first contact - sorry, double checking facts - I cant fault them.

Obviously, though, the car wasn't repaired as it was Cat B

My 21 year old daughter lives in Toxteth with her musician boyfriend named on the policy of a Mini Cooper.  She paid £325.

Mind you the first quote on a comparison site was £3200  :o

my five star insurance was going up by £200 , was almost £400 quoted over £600. i didnt go for it & told the hasting direct so. same old story they did not want to lose a customer so they searched and came up with a policy for £377 . still ticked all the boxes. sad though when insurance is double the price the insurers deem my mig to be worth.

I enjoyed that film.

Definitely not taken the wrong way.  In fact when she said she was moving to a flat near to the Anglican Cathedral, I kind of misquoted that:  "That's in L8 then? Toxteth, as in Toxic and Death ? "

Wife still remembers the riots because her dad was a teacher in the Dingle at the time.
