It's time to sort out my cars for MOTs. It is dawning upon me that I am running seven 18 year old cars. In the 60s cars used to rust away in 6 or 7 years. In the 80s my cars wore out mechanically in 10 years. In the 1990s and 2000s my Senators eventually wore out their clutches, so I scrapped them. JamesV6CDX and forum members have taught me how to change Omega clutches, now rusty cills are the problem.

I have begun to inspect the April MOT candidates. The first 2, both 2000 2.5 estates, have sound cills. Great! The third, a 2000 2.2 saloon, will need both cills repairing. Bother. All seven cars are running well, and could last another year.

Used Omegas seem to get rarer and more expensive. Last week a 2002 2.6 went for £1300 - ridiculous!

They are lighter than variants further up the range, which could be important with a 4 pot engine.

It,s not the fact that they are GLS. it,s just a lot for an entry level 15yr old car.

So there is!  MOT failed January 2018 22 items, mainly brakes and lights. MOT passed March 2017 1 advisory worn rear brake discs.

You've forgot to mention the cracked and rotten chassis rails too.

A random MOT check of Omegas for sale tells a depressingly similar story. Terry's don't sound too bad in comparison, eminently fixable.
The one mentioned on ebay looks like one step removed from a death trap to me - cracked chassis rail -  unless it's £1495 because he's rectified everything that's wrong and needs to make something on it. Looks like it's going to need one hell of a welding session.

When going to buy an Omega now, best take the overalls and a pointy tool.

Here is a low mileage  Omega, with current MOT to March 2018, in a terrible state, beyond economic repair. I am shocked that in 9 months and 4000 miles a car could deteriorate so much.
Do MOT testers have check lists specific to certain cars, or just go around with check lists inspecting standard things and ticking boxes? I have watched them doing it often enough, but stood back and not enquired.

I'm sure they have things to look out for on certain models. That the back end isn't only connected by the fuel line, the exhaust and the propshaft in the case of a Navara, for example.

Well it seems that the dealer thought it worth the bother and has had the 99 elite estate "repaired" and it now has an mot for another year.. but just how well was the work done??.

My CDX similar went for £400 last year. No-one on OOF wanted it, and it had complete new shocks, springs plus all welding done.
