Starting Issue
« on: 18 April 2007, 16:41:13 »

Got a starting problem and hope anyone can throw in some advise. Got a 3.0 V6 2001. The car wouldnt start. It would crank and fire, but the engine just wouldnt start. i noticed that the firing wouldnt happen unless i press on the gas during cranking. i would hear the fire but when i stop cranking engine would just die.
Problem been coming and going. for the past 4 days it would start very nicely, however today it refused to start. looks like an intermittent problem.
Could it possibly be the crank sensor? but im thinking if its the crank sensor then the car wouldnt fire at all since there would be no signal to the ECU commanding the spark plug to fire.
any thoughts?

It sounds like the crank sensor, but I'm no V6 expert.

Someone should offer advice shortly.

Got a similar problem with mine and I suspect the crank sensor too. It happens every week to 10 days. Sometimes after a run and sometimes after it sat overnight. So far it starts after a few minutes but I'm going to have to sort it before it leaves me stranded.

In my experience when the crank sensor is failing the car doesn't fire at all. It turns over great but no hint of firing.

I'd start with reading the fault codes and see what you get.

Just to clarify, mine just turns over but no hint of firing at all which is what leads me to think it's crank sensor as I'm sure I've read somewhere that this can be the sign of the crank sensor failing. I'll have to read the codes.

Do paperclip test and report back.

It could be a simple ICV fault...

This sounds a bit similar to what happened to me today - on startup the engine cranked and cranked - spun over nice and fast but no start - and no cough/splut either - it was like there was no ignition at all.  Then about 5 mins later I retried and it fired straight into life, drove smoothly as per usual and no rough running.  Didnt test for any fault codes but no 'check engine' light either.  Crank sensor??

Fast cranking may be caused by borewash (oil 'seal' between piston and block wash away, normally due to rich mixture, particularly is choke is used)

Thanks alot for the inputs.
Actually today i tried starting the car however same symtoms, cranking, firing at random spots but not starting. I fear with continous cranking might be actually overflooding the engine with fuel and choking it.
Did the paper clip test, only code 12 is showing.
Worthmentioning that a month ago i changed my gear oil & filter and after a few days did the paperclip test and it was giving code 19 but with no noticeable problems. Today this code is gone (probably after numurous successful starts 19 get automatically erased).
Probably would start by checking the crank sensor connection. Could it be a cam sensor. Seems that relationship between both sensors is little complicated.

TB can you elaborate a little especially for us newbies =P

You've had a recent 19 code, but not changed the crank sensor?  Start with changing it...

cdx25 your symptoms sound like a definite failing crank sensor to me.

Change the sensor and the problem will disappear.

Mine usually wont fire up on first turn of the key in the morning, but a second try straight after results in it starting.  No subsequent problems during the rest of the day and no EML, although I haven't paper clipped it recently.  I seem to recall one or two others on here had the same issue.
She does idle a bit lumpy sometimes, the ICV has been stripped and cleaned, so I am wondering about the HT leads.  I have the set that came off of Laidback's  estate he is breaking and will swop them over (except for No. ! which is burn't through!)

TB - when the engine cranks it cranks at a 'normal' (as far as I can tell!) speed, what I meant to say was that Ive not got a flat bat or knackered starter issue.

Cheers JasonH - this is what Im beginning to suspect...  but no fault codes are popping up??  (Also, it has never cut out whilst driving.)

Update:  I was in my local Vx for oil and filter today and explained what was happening. They attached the Tech 2 and it is indeed the crank sensor..
