Omega General Help / Re: Oil level Omega B 2.5
« on: 09 December 2011, 16:47:42 »
Just a thought.........
With the lifting eye missing wont the ever-so-brittle alloy transfer pipe bracket be strained somewhat? Or do we assume that by some miracle the pipe o rings are not welded to the thermostat housing as usually is the case and the pipe has been able to find a new comfortable position, just slightly deeper into the thermostat.

Omega General Help / Re: pulley
« on: 09 December 2011, 16:33:46 »
The pulley is actually described as a torque damper in the parts list.
Im not sure wether it is intended to smooth the torque delivery to things driven off the aux belt or wether it acts as a vibration damper to the crankshaft.

The rubber bonding can fail and the outer rim of the pulley comes off so replace it if it is badly deteriorating.

Omega General Help / Re: Brake switch
« on: 24 November 2011, 13:22:26 »
Pull the grey plunger out, it has a ratchet to adjust for pedal position. Once the grey bit is fully extended, the red bit will also pull out far enough to allow the two latches to be pressed in.
Be aware that the latches are quite brittle, squeeze them in just enough to release the switch from the bracket.

General Discussion Area / Time for a change
« on: 05 November 2011, 23:32:22 »
After 11 years of Omega ownership I am now omega-less; JohnM came today and took my 2.5 estate to a new home in Newark. I hope it serves you well John.

Over the years I think I have done every job possible on an Omega and am ready for a change and a new challenge so its time to hit the Autotrader, my only definite requirement is that it has to be an estate.

Im not leaving the forum completely. I will pop in from time to time but I seem to be spending more time thinking about and working on various bits of plant on the GCR, especially my nemesis, the Case 688 360, which I will get working, someday.

TaTa.

Seems to be a common fault, ours developed a habit of turning on during the night which upset the neighbours as the car was on their drive whilst I relaid mine.
Fault was a leaky transistor in the on/off circuit. Try Dave DND if you are not electronically competant youself.

Pic of the connector here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90557.0

Any reason to think that hose has been disturbed recently so might not have been refitted properly?
The green bit can be thrown away, its only needed in the factory.

If it has not been fitted properly then removing the connector and cleaning the end of the metal pipe before refitting is all that is needed; but if one of the internal O rings has perrished then disturbing it is going to cause a bigger leak so choose your moment to play with it.

General Car Chat / Re: Repairing a snapped cast alloy housing
« on: 01 November 2011, 12:01:26 »
I guess the answer depends on what loads are applied to the snapped part, if it is just location then you might be OK with metal loaded epoxy such as JB Weld, provided you can de-grease the joint properly.
Alloy can be welded but you really should find someone with experience and a TIG welder.

Omega General Help / Re: Smoke from engine
« on: 01 November 2011, 11:56:51 »
Left of the power steering reservoir....so between reservoir and engine?

Sounds like a leak from the camcover seal. Pull off the HT leads on that side, if the camcovers are leaking then the spark plug recesses usually fill with oil and you would see it on the HT lead plug cap.

General Car Chat / Re: No way is this a 1963 car........

aside from the cosmetic tart-up....
where have the external door hinges gone?
or the sliding windows?
or the bit of string which served as the inside door handle?
and the ankle straps?

Leave the carpet tiles in there until spring comes and the snows have gone?

General Car Chat / Re: Corsa scuttle drain?
« on: 26 October 2011, 12:06:35 »
Tell him to look again, lift the black plastic bits in-board of the screen wash reservoir, and while he is there he can check the brake fluid as he has obviously never been in there before.

I cant remember where the drain is but it blocked on my daughters Corsa C and skin was lost in clearing it.

Omega General Help / Re: Plumbing at rear of V6
« on: 26 October 2011, 11:57:00 »
Use the tip of a spare water filler cap, hole drilled in centre and a tyre valve stuck in with a bit of silicone to seal. You can then use a foot pump to put 7 - 10 psi on the cooling system whilst you look for the leak (s).

Depends how bad the leak is, I have seen the helter skelter pipe split (big leak)
Thinking about it logicaly, the helter skelter pipe is the hot feed to the bypass valve so would come off the coolant bridge.

The cold/cooler return goes to the metal transfer pipe so this will be the one that connects to the bypass vlave and bulk head.

Enough water spraying onto a hot exhaust to fill the southbound A5 with steam as I remember :-[ ;D

Are both handbrake return springs present and correct on the brake back plate? They hook between the cable ends and a hole in the back plate.

Omega General Help / Re: Front crank seal part number
« on: 28 September 2011, 13:33:59 »
Have always replaced the bolt so far per TIS but since it doesnt actually go beyond the yield point it should be OK to re-use. Not been brave enough myself on my or other peoples engines.

Have a couple of used ones in stock if you need one.

Sprocket spacer / seal-runner is OK to re-use, just clean it up and remove any surface marks with wet&dry then put it back in 'backwards' so the new seal runs on an un-worn bit.
