General Car Chat / What to do with my old Omega?
« on: 26 November 2014, 00:49:43 »
Hi there strangers! Good to see the forum still going. :)

I just wanted to sound you guys out when you've a moment. I've got a 2.5 V6 mini facelift Elite from '99 still sitting on the drive and it needs a deserving home. What shall I do with it?

I took my last two Omegas to EMR for end of life recycling. Much better rates then the touring scrapmen that plague the streets (although they're not as common a site as a few years ago), but in this case I wanted to ask what opinions on here are before using that last resort option again.

Being a 15 year old motor it's more of a classic now maybe?

Shall I sell it as is?

Should it be broken for spares?

Shall I scrap it?

Is it worth being used for a project?

Breaking it might seem the option to gain most money, but I don't really have the time or space for that. If somebody else local had space then I could find time maybe? Back in the day a manual gearbox was rare and it'd be a shame to have it crushed. I had one tree surgeon offer to buy it for demolition derby use so really only wanted the shell. He never came back.

Anyway, here's the specs. It's a pale blue S-reg saloon with beige leather seats/trim and a LOT of Elite goodies. It's done about 80k miles and has the 2.5V6 petrol engine with a Manual gearbox. Previous to 2011 it had works done by local mechanics and Timbuk that included a new oil cooler, water pump etc, new cam cover seals, replacement twin pipe exhaust from a 3.0V6 and probably more.

It last spluttered with life in the spring of 2011 before being diagnosed as a blown head gasket. Back then Jamesv6CDX was going to come fix the engine and it'd roar into life again. Oh what a lovely sound. But as that never transpired it has resided on our drive ever since. It has been pushed forward and back occasionally. (I have written about it before, but not for many moons).

I haven't had the pleasure of driving an Omega for nearly four years now! I loved my various V6s, Elites, saloons and estate which is probably why my last one is still sitting on the drive. But needs must, space being the biggest need. The family's growing too!

My driver has been a Vectra diesel Estate that is still going strong and feels nearly as comfy as the old Omega. With an average now of 45mpg I don't miss the petrol bills!

I await your wisdom and help.

Cheers, Dave.

Omega General Help / How to remove an LPG system?
« on: 06 July 2011, 14:46:58 »
Yesterday was the anniversary of my LPG estate's demise. It has sat on the drive doing nothing for a whole year!

Time to strip it down and be rid. The LPG kit I believe has some value, and I wondered if anybody on here had pointers to safe removal, and what to take off etc. Like is it worth taking all the pipes or would new ones be needed for next use anyway?

Any advice very very gratefully received.
Thank you
TTFN
Dave

Omega General Help / Paperclip Fault Code 10-3-4-10 on 2.0 16V
« on: 11 September 2009, 15:45:52 »
Hi,

As subject, i've just done a paperclip test and got the following sequence.
10 - 3 - 4 - 10.

The EML light's coming on sporadically!

Sometimes it doesn't come on, sometimes it does. when it does it stays on....

Engine is really yuk at idle and sometimes revs up by itself. Going to clean the ICV shortly but wanted to know what the codes meant?

Thanking you muchly :)

Omega General Help / changing exhaust manifold gasket on a 2.0
« on: 09 July 2009, 10:56:36 »
I need to do this, and can't find any helpful how-to's or maintenance guides.

Anyone any pointers?

Like how to change the studs too, which appears to be a good idea?  :-/

It is only a 2.0 16v so lots more room than the v6  :y

Omega General Help / radiator swap. 2.5v6 into 2.0..help!
« on: 28 June 2009, 16:53:03 »
So a while ago my radiator had a little leak - on the plastic at the top right corner. i fixed it with plastic padding stuff back then, and a couple of times since. however it's gone again and i've had enough of topping up the water! It's in my '99 2.0 estate (GLS mini face, manual with a/c)

as i've got a spare 2.5 v6 cdx sitting around ('96 P, auto), i thought i'd start making use of its parts. this pm removed the radiator with the intention of fitting it to the estate.

however now i'm noticing the auto transmission cooler - any suggestions on what to bung the holes up with as they're not needed on the manual?
Also the secondary air cut-off valve is either in a different place on non-existent on the 2.0

Am i being silly and should just get to a breakers for a 2.0 rad? or is this swap do-able.

I don't want to do another plastic padding repair as i think it's only worked while i've done short journeys. long ones are planned for the summer!

hope for some help, thanks in advance :)

Omega General Help / In Car Air movement vacuum pipe order
« on: 08 July 2009, 10:31:56 »
snappy title huh. :-?

I've still got a problem with my standard GLS interior heating/cooling system, ie 4 knobs, (it's not climate control, but I don't know what to call it!)

The direction knob doesnt make much difference to where the air comes from - mostly just at the screen. Thoughts previously were that a vacuum pipe had come off, but I can only find five and they are all attached.  :-/

I've had a look on the back of the knob and there are five vacuum pipes - red, green, white, blue and yellow. There is what looks like a sixth position on the dial too. Has anyone got a pic/diag of what order and which lugs these pipes are meant to be on?

While Keith from Coolcar (what a dude :y :y) serviced the aircon the other day, he tried covering the sixth position to no difference. His theory was that the five pipes were all, but in the wrong order.
On a side note, his aircon servicing was great and he took the extra time to look behind the radio at the controls for free :y

Hayulp please!

Omega General Help / Random Revving
« on: 01 December 2008, 20:48:21 »
On my LPG 2 litre estate i'm sometimes getting a random revving occurring! :-/

It's only noticeable at standstill and doesn't happen all the time, the engine revs from roughly 500 to 1500 by itself. (can't be too sure of that at the mo as the rev counter still doesnt work at all currently, see sep post: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1227461312/8#8 . A new (s/h) set of clocks should fix this sometime soon )

Sometimes i think a dab on the accelerator has stopped the random revving but as it's random it's hard to find a definite cause and cure!

any ideas for a place to start hunting?

Omega General Help / how fast? no idea! no tacho or speedo! Hayullp!
« on: 23 November 2008, 17:28:32 »
oh dear oh dear! My current driving mig ('99 2.0 LPG GLS estate) went a tad cuckoo last night. It was fine on the way to work but on the way home the tacho stayed put at zero and the speedo just wobbled rapidly around the zero mark too :(

any ideas? I've had it out today and still the same. No warning lights on, it drives as normal etc etc. um! i dont wanna get a ticket, but maybe i'll need a tomtom to show me how fast i'm goin!

This couple with the fact the temperature gauge hasn't worked for ages makes for a very dull dash! (i have no idea how to get that working either or where to look on a 16valver for the right cables!)  :-/

anyway, as ever, any words of wisdom would be muchos appreciated!

think i got a bangles moment coming.... tomorrow is going to be a very Manic Monday!  :D

Omega General Help / Temp Gauge not moving
« on: 15 September 2008, 13:15:09 »
sorry been away for a while but now i've got a fairly simple problem.... no idea where to start to sort it tho.

the temperature gauge doesn't move anymore! :(

could it be anything to do with a tiny hole in the top of the radiator that means the system gets slightly topped up every fortnight?

thanks for your thoughts....

Omega General Help / i likes fresh air i do. shame i can't get it!
« on: 10 August 2008, 22:07:38 »
i likes it in me face. and in really hot weather when in me shorts i like it on me legs too.  8-)

sadly this doesn't happen me new gls estate. It aint got posh climate control (a subject for later...)  just dially blue/red knobs and a speed one that all seem to do their job. and a position one that does naff all. the air only comes out by the windscreen!

any idea why no air comes out of the facia vents or the leg vents?  :-/

if i switch the air con on, then the air gets cold but still only from the same place!! kinda messes up the fuel consumption too!

as does the alternative method of cooling which mrs dippy enjoys.... opening the windows  :o :o

ps
a separate project for another time but any idea how tricky it is to swap dially knobs for climate control? is it just a panel swap or are there trickier things involved?!!

Omega General Help / Head Gasket change - help please!
« on: 03 August 2008, 23:14:48 »
As discussed in my previous thread
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1213844651/0
my car isn't happy. neither am i as i havent been using it!

I've not had the bottle or the time to strip the engine (for the first time in my life!!!) and have got to the stage where i really would like someone to do it!

Anyone want to have a go this week? Or know a local/brummie that does?
The car does drive but i'm trying to minimise the extra wear/tear/smell that produces!

I've beer tokens, tea, a trade club card and enthusiasm to offer!

Dave.

Omega General Help / smoke from the engine bay. never good
« on: 19 June 2008, 04:04:11 »
indeed that's what i had after coming home from wrk today. :(

only a three mile trip as well!

thought the smell in the cabin was like burning oil. odd as timbuk did the cam gaskets a wee while ago and everything seemd tight and tickety boo!

howver, got home, popped the bonnet and found the smell to be more like burning rubber. only there was smoke coming from the o/s part of the engine. looked like from under/around the exhaust heat shield (well below the bottom cam cover for certain anyway).

any bright ideas?
