General Car Chat / Re: What to do with my old Omega?
« on: 26 November 2014, 22:14:48 »
Wow, thanks for the replies folks! Great food for thought :)

First dibs on the abs ecu for a fellow member if you break it. Btw You will get a up to £150 for the box and prop if it's an r28 as it's very popular with the kit car market

Sure thing, not sure where the abs ecu is, but can't be that hard to find. I did think the box would be valuable as it used to often revered!

2.5 headgasket gone at 80K?  :-\  Are you sure it's the HG?  ???  :-\

That's what I thought, actually. I know there's several maladies with the V6 which get wrongly diagnosed as HG.

It's just in that S plate region though isn't it.

I went through all the 'is it HG, isn't it' thoughts all those moons ago and did have the usual suspects of oil cooler etc changed/fixed. But the rac man who came out at the time was really sure about his tests and it all pointed to the HG finally....

Well I will throw my two pennworth in.

Sadly it is't worth much. No MOT, hasn't run for ages might have head gasket gone problem . If it was a Mondeo then I would say scrap it and pocket maybe £260 and enjoy the fact it wasn't on your drive anymore.

Being an Elite and having some history and work done to it is a plus but others wise it is still just £260 of scrap in todays market. On time rather than mileage it is due another cambelt change.

I would put it up for sale on the forum for £300 buyer collects. Hopefully the car would then either live on complete or be donor parts (i.e. broken by the buyer with skill, time, space etc) for forum members etc

Here is a similar (admittedly not Elite car) BIN £275 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-VAUXHALL-OMEGA-CDX-2-2-TOP-SPEC-NO-MOT-CHEAP-CAR-VECTRA-MONDEO-CALIBRA-/191403636539?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2c908bb73b

Very helpful Varche, and yes you're very correct about the cambelt!
Biggest problem is getting the car to the buyer if no mot ect although i seen an ad not so long ago where you could hire car trailer for £100 a day but there are people out there that just buy Omega's ... bloke from nottingham i think name is chris bought mine and all he does is break and sell Omega's  :y

If I can find this Chris, I'll certainly be in touch as Nottingham is only 45 miles away....

I just feel very optimistic that my old bluey will be moving on now, thank you....

Thanks emd, yeah I'd rather it went to good use! Unless I can find somewhere to rest it, I can't keep it for spares anymore. (You may say well it's been sitting there for 3 years, what harm will more months do - tell that to mrs dippy and junior dippys!)

At one point I did have a donor car but again that had to go, and without a workshop, it's not the best arrangement for the front lawn is it!

So maybe i'll put it in the for sale section and see if anybody's interested that way.

General Car Chat / What to do with my old Omega?
« on: 26 November 2014, 00:49:43 »
Hi there strangers! Good to see the forum still going. :)

I just wanted to sound you guys out when you've a moment. I've got a 2.5 V6 mini facelift Elite from '99 still sitting on the drive and it needs a deserving home. What shall I do with it?

I took my last two Omegas to EMR for end of life recycling. Much better rates then the touring scrapmen that plague the streets (although they're not as common a site as a few years ago), but in this case I wanted to ask what opinions on here are before using that last resort option again.

Being a 15 year old motor it's more of a classic now maybe?

Shall I sell it as is?

Should it be broken for spares?

Shall I scrap it?

Is it worth being used for a project?

Breaking it might seem the option to gain most money, but I don't really have the time or space for that. If somebody else local had space then I could find time maybe? Back in the day a manual gearbox was rare and it'd be a shame to have it crushed. I had one tree surgeon offer to buy it for demolition derby use so really only wanted the shell. He never came back.

Anyway, here's the specs. It's a pale blue S-reg saloon with beige leather seats/trim and a LOT of Elite goodies. It's done about 80k miles and has the 2.5V6 petrol engine with a Manual gearbox. Previous to 2011 it had works done by local mechanics and Timbuk that included a new oil cooler, water pump etc, new cam cover seals, replacement twin pipe exhaust from a 3.0V6 and probably more.

It last spluttered with life in the spring of 2011 before being diagnosed as a blown head gasket. Back then Jamesv6CDX was going to come fix the engine and it'd roar into life again. Oh what a lovely sound. But as that never transpired it has resided on our drive ever since. It has been pushed forward and back occasionally. (I have written about it before, but not for many moons).

I haven't had the pleasure of driving an Omega for nearly four years now! I loved my various V6s, Elites, saloons and estate which is probably why my last one is still sitting on the drive. But needs must, space being the biggest need. The family's growing too!

My driver has been a Vectra diesel Estate that is still going strong and feels nearly as comfy as the old Omega. With an average now of 45mpg I don't miss the petrol bills!

I await your wisdom and help.

Cheers, Dave.

Hellooooo!

You may not believe this James... first time i've logged on for a very long time.. to see if anybody wants an LPG tank and here's your ad!

Well i've the Stako/BRC donut tank still that you fitted to the old gold estate. I've just been mooching around the web wondering where best to sell it!

Did you want spare wheel size or cylinder?

My contacts are still the same... it'd be nice to hear from you.
Dave.

PS The blue 2.5V6 Elite is still on my drive too. It's waited a few years for your trip up to fix the head gasket... ;)

Yes, possible to fit. May need some studying of wireing diags.

Basically, the bose loom intercepts the feed to speakers (at drivers kick panel), and reroutes via amp, and feeds back to speakers. The eception is the 2 shelf speakers which are fed direct from amp.

didn't realise there are shelf speakers in an estate!  ;D  ;)

I imagine it's a bit more complicated as the amp goes on one side of the boot and the sub on the other? oh and where does the cd changer go?!

it's a lot easier bolting it all in a box under the saloon shelf!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Engine temp problem
« on: 24 July 2009, 18:23:23 »
mine stopped working because the spade connector had come off. took ages to work out where to put it back as the temp sender had a round connector not rectangular as i was expecting!

It's on the back of my engine, but that's a 2.0 16V so maybe not that helpful for a V6 :-/. I'm sure there's more info on the forum about them though :)

anyway
Here's a link to a picture of the one for sale from vaux-world:

...... and I also liked the way it faded the music to the back speakers when making an announcement......

Mmm? My factory fit sat-nav uses a tuppeny ha'penny speaker in the passenger footwell. If you look in the hand book for the CCRT700 as fitted to mine it mentions 'EXT.VOL' An external source can be fitted to the CCRT700(for example a navigation system)
but according to Vauxahll you can't connect the two?  :-?  :-?  :-?
What do you know that Vauxhall doesn't?  :y

my thoughts exactly! it would be ideal to have an option to have the sat nav come through the ccrt700 to save fitting the tuppeny speaker again! - or maybe even switchable to have both?!
and as for gyroscopes, i thought they were only on ships with sails  :-?

Hi jules, just found this post while looking for a map to update my carin before bothering to reinstall it, so hope my info isn't too late to be of use!

yes i had the factory fitted carin in my previous '99 3.0 elite, and when it went to the scrapper i took the time to remove it!! now thinking of putting it in my current motor, but only if i can update the mapping. it was fantastic at getting me home after using old fashioned directions and maps to get to places. Also it worked well as an estimate of how long to get to a destination! got me round some jams as well. i've never used a tomtom, but carin seems more discreet, less nickable, and was good enough!

sorry if i get distracted later on......

Hate Tom Toms  :-/

So to anyone with a 1999 mini-facelift Carin:

Does the CD-Unit mount in the boot or the glovebox ?
Mine was in the boot. Where the 5th headrest sits. it's not a small unit but you might be able to fit in glove box if you really wanted.

Is it controlled by a fixed or removable remote?
i had a fixed knob, just to the left of the handbrake. hole necessary! it had a push-click and rotated to select stuff

Is there a GPS receiver in the ariel on the roof ? (Radio has ONSTAR)
i think the roof aerial is just for the phone. I had my satnav receiver behind the dash, simple enough to get to following mr haynes!

I know the CCRT700 can provide the sat nav audio, but does the built-in GID support a sat-nav input ?
didn't know the radio could provide audio - i had a separate small speaker in the passenger footwell. ps what's a GID?!

Does anyone know the part-code for the screen that goes where the cuddy is ?
not off the top of my head - the gear is boxed in the loft at the moment!

Does anyone have the 'front loom' and or scree for sale ?
the loom was tricky to get from round the glove box but managable eventually. if i can't get updated maps then my stuff will be for sale sometime....

Cheers for taking the time to answer.

thought i'd put my answers in lovely blue :)

It has been said that Satnavs will do for Geography learning what calculators have done for Maths - ie we'll be knackered without em in da future! Imagine what you'd do if the thing broke down and you didn't know how to use or even own a map! And it might mean the end of all funny roadsigns! my cousin won't take directions of anybody now he has a tomtom - he follows it rigidly!
As for conversations down the pub -
"oh which way did you go mate? i followed the A452 then the A5, missed out all the bottlenecks"  :)
"nah you should've took the A4097 then the A38 mate, been loads quicker"  ;D
" i took the scenic A4041 and B52, much nicer"  8-)
" dunno, i just followed the sat nav"   :-/

:-X

hmmm.
PS don't quote the above route directions, i made them up and probably the roads don't even meet!!!

Omega General Help / How to remove an LPG system?
« on: 06 July 2011, 14:46:58 »
Yesterday was the anniversary of my LPG estate's demise. It has sat on the drive doing nothing for a whole year!

Time to strip it down and be rid. The LPG kit I believe has some value, and I wondered if anybody on here had pointers to safe removal, and what to take off etc. Like is it worth taking all the pipes or would new ones be needed for next use anyway?

Any advice very very gratefully received.
Thank you

Dave

Still haven't checked for codes Pete, will get on to that as it's sitting eating tax!

Going to print this page out as well Daz to check your questions, although as the car doesn't start I'm not sure how far I'll get.

I have checked for whether the cam belt's broke tho, and it's not. Those little lobes still move just fine.

Anyhoo, really just need to get on with it so catch you laters potatas!
