exhaust manifolds 3.2
« on: 01 February 2011, 20:48:54 »

Is there an easy way to check the exhaust manifolds for leaks/splits.  Garage has suggested waiting til it gets worse and it will tell me where it is but i like to catch things early.
Any tips chaps :-/

Not seen to many issues with the 3.2/2.6 manifolds.

Do check the front pipe to manifold gaskets though

Mark, Quick fit did but thought it was a manifold but not sure which one.  Vauxhall garage said the ticking noise could be either the purge control or manifold leak/split.  pulled off the purge pipe and put thumb over it but still it ticked.  Noise comes and goes and is not usually there on start up as you would expect cold.  Noticeable on tick over more.  Engine was replaced at 57,000 and now has 98,000.  Only covered 40,000 miles.  Comes from back of engine bay

If its the purge valve then pulling the pipe wont do anything as its the solenoid that ticks.....

aha was advised by another memeber that pulling pipe off and covering with thumb would test it.  I did say to him that surely the solenoid would still go.  Where exactly is this little bugger located and is it easly to disconnect without stripping.  Had the same problem with a saab 900 years ago and had to replace.  Would that come and go if faulty and give engine a slight vibration on idle.  Rev counter steady though.

Black (usualy) with two pipes and a two wire electrical connector, sits next to the breather box

so if i disconnect and tick stops replace. Are these expensive??
Mark, I fitted an oil pressure gauge over the weekend and am getting a tick over pressure of 1.2-1.5bar and on pushing on hard up to 5bar.  Does that sound ok?

Its within spec, was that when warm (greater than 80 deg C).

It will be a bit dependent on oil grade used also.

The spec is 1.2 bar when rpm = 700-800 (idle with aircon on) and new oil temp > 80 deg C

Replace yes, very rare for them to be noisey though so second hand should be fine.

So pretty good then, thinner oil than Vx standard and lower rpm

ex local gov minister car armoured. Put gauge in as thought tick was lifters at first.  I know when the purge valve on the saab went it was very noisy and i replaced with a 2nd hand one.  I am right in thinking if its faulty it could be letting gases in at idle which could make slight engine trembles.  Dont usually work at idle does it?
