Scares the sh!t out of me that Corbyn has a shot a power.
I think you have to give him credit for being a good campaigner. Like the last election Labour have moved the conversation from BREXIT to the NHS and that has dominated the headlines, whether pictures of little boys lying on hospital floors are fake or not.
Having said that, the narrative that Labour are the custodians of the NHS is complete 'dangle berries'! Remember the renegotiation of the Doctors contracts by Patricia Hewitt the then Labour Health Secretary, where they got a massive pay rise and the obligation to provide 24/7 services was removed? I bet the Dr's couldn't believe their luck!
Your right they couldn't. A few years ago I read an interview with the chief doctors negotiator. He said we went into the talks and the Govt. side said "ok what do you want ?" The doctors side then gave them a wish list of demands, assuming this was an opening gambit and they would negotiate to an agreement somewhere in the middle, as is normal. He said they simply replied "ok, not a problem". And that was the end of the matter. The really could not believe their luck. A huge salary increase for less hours worked, and it basically became a Mon. to Fri. 9 to 5 job overnight.
Now 20 years later, GP,s claim they are overworked, underpaid et. etc. and send much of their work to A&E depts. as they simply cant cope with the stress.
What happened to doctors who saw their job as a calling, and went to almost any lengths to help the sick and afflicted ?
It takes 3 to 4 weeks to get an appointment at my local surgery these days, yet every time I go there the waiting room is almost empty.
A good friend of mine used to be the practice manager there and I asked him why this was the case. He told me its very simple. The doctors now spend much of their time doing private work and earning a fortune on top of their NHS six figure salaries, so NHS patients are a low priority.
As far as Im concerned they are a disgrace to their profession.
