Omega General Help / Bonnet auxiliary/emergency release mod?
« on: 07 January 2022, 00:12:55 »
Has anyone managed to work out how to fit a permanent emergency bonnet release activated from outside the car, eg dangling pull chord etc for the facelift model. I do not mean the tool described in the FAQ/Maintenance guide but as something to prevent the need for that by planning ahead and fitting permanently.

I managed to open my bonnet finally and do not want to go through that worry again (yes, I appreciate that fitting  a replacement cable will stave off the reoccurrence at least for a while, but that isn't the point here) and thought that an auxiliary pull might be a good idea (low-life excepted). I have already pulled back the outer cable and there must be a limit to that trick....

Looking at the bonnet release, it seems sandwiched between two sheets of the slam panel and I could see no easy way; however brighter sparks than me might have already done it, so please share!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / On My Radio code. Not. Alarmed!
« on: 23 December 2021, 18:23:09 »
It's me, yes, again. Third time today.

I am continually frustrated in diagnostics on this car by the irritating worry about losing the radio code or the alarm sounding if I do not re-connect battery within 15 seconds.

An insertable battery saver only works as long as the cigarette lighter socket is active (not long) and using a slave battery is inconvenient, plus I like to do some tests with a dead system.

Therefore, is there anyway to find out the radio code without going to the dealer (pm me if you feel that is a more secure way to share the info). I believe there is a way to disable the code but if you do through the process more than once, you inadvertently re-activate the code protection! Thoughts on this welcome.

I have had the car from new and the radio was replaced under warranty; except they didn't give me the me code.

Is there any way to disarm the alarm (not immobiliser) permanently also? Again, Pm me if easier.

Cheers

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Bulb spec list?
« on: 23 December 2021, 17:38:40 »
Hello all

still working on this parasitic draw I needed to do some calculations on the interior lighting but could find no list of all the bulbs installed in the car, not in Haynes nor the glovebox owners manual.

Can anyone shine a light toward such a list please? Omega Estate B 2003.

Thanks

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Fuse con-fuse-ion: parasitic draw
« on: 23 December 2021, 17:36:02 »
Season's greetings All

I am trying to track down a parasitic draw and using an AMP Hound for ease, found nothing except the interior light fuse with a 1.2A current going through it - doors open (I didn't want to jump the door mechanisms on the central locking yet).

I will post another on the draw but the issue for this post is the fuses: I assume that the fuse controls the interior light circuit as removing it, the lights went out.

But what other circuits does that 10A fuse (no7) control?
The links to the fuse disposition in the FAQ etc for the B Omega seem to have fuse 7 as a 30A item controlling the window motors  - clearly not here, nor does it conform to the glovebox manual.

Does anyone have a detailed list of the fuse specs and location for the 2003 Omega B please (ie not just the page from the glovebox manual)?

The glovebox manual says the fuse 7 controls 7:
Check control,
engine oil level,
courtesy lamp
Ok the last two are clear enough but what is "check control"?

Thanks

Yes it is me..again...

As part of the numerous jobs to do to keep the wonderful car (2.2L) on the road, I need to change the HBV again, this time using a genuine GM type.

However, although i have removed the scuttle panel (again) and the bracket over the wiper mechanism and tried to work from below, i just cannot seem to get any purchase on the hoses going to the HBV (NB car is on 9" ramps now). There is only room for one hand to get in from above or below and that means the whole assembly moves as I try and fail to get hoses off.

Any tricks here?
Any more parts to come off first?
How do the "quick release" unions at the bulkhead work? Will they help me achieve the goal?

I have drained coolant down whilst on ramp - not sure if there is any more coolant that will exit on taking valve out. I have tried clamps but that reduces yet further the minimal room available.

Are there any modifications, that others have tried successfully, to make the job easier next time, eg extending the hoses.....?

cheers

Omega General Help / Cam cover gasket replacement further advice
« on: 22 December 2019, 13:08:23 »
Hello

ref the guide:
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90597.0

is the perceived wisdom NOT to use gasket sealant all the way round the faces so as to assist the rubber seal or not?
re the photo in the guide shows sealant on the arches, there is a futher note contradicting it.

1 What is the best approach for a leak free seal?

2 What sealant have people had good and bad experience with?
3 Is this a good time to go further and clean the cam followers out? I do get some ticking on start up after 2-3 days inactivity.

Many thanks and Merry Christmas

Hello all

after all this rain recently, I was unable to start car 2.2cdx after a 3 day park-up. I had similar issue two years back and traced that to water in the spark plug wells so checked that again and yup, there it is again although less than last time and some oil evident.

Previously I saw that the foam above the ecotec cover was sodden and  I fitted a plate to redirect drips; it has worked until now but as it has failed this time i thought i'd check back here.

The Maintenance Guide is useful
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=128823.0
however I just cannot seem to orientate myself to the photo: it seems too small for me to work out where
I am supposed to be adding sealant. Can anyone post a better photo please? I feel that the guide needs a bit of amplification, as good as it is already.

Also:
1 Do I need to remove the scuttle to do this?

2 Where do I treat the wiper spindles with sealant?

3 How do you get a good seal between windscreen and scuttle's rubber edge? It does not seems to want to to sit flat around the whole curve of the windscreen and clip at the furtherest left and right ends

4 How to remove the water/oil from the wells before removal of spark plugs? I have tried syringe and hose, cloth and shop-paper without much success. I have no access to good pressure compressed air to blow it out (and don't want the mess either!!)

5 Re the oil, I replaced the breather hose and cleaned through a couple of years back too but I guess the cam box seal has given? I see references to a Maintenance Guide for that so will check there.

All info/guidance etc gratefully received.

Merry Christmas

Hello all
Can anyone recommend such an app (free please) form google play store for the 2.2 omega?
The ones I have tried have only worked partially or not at all.

Thanks

Omega General Help / Tracking and alignment - Wheels in Motion
« on: 24 November 2019, 13:46:08 »
Popped down to see Tony at Wheels in Motion again this week. Great service as ever and the droning from the front traced to under-inflated tyres (was as a result of using a badly calibrated gauge) and not bearings, also led to premature wear of front tyres.

Two new P7s fitted, balanced etc and the car is transformed.

The alignment specs were checked and fond to be still as per Tony's last setting ages ago. V pleased with him and the two fitters Ross and Liam. A refreshing change from the usual can;t be bothered attitude you get in many places

Hello all

I know this has been asked before but i want to ask it my way!!....and hopefully get views from those who have actually done the full flush with transmission cleaning fluid rather  than just theorising, please.

Popped down to local auto trans garage to get a quote today. After 75k I think the car deserves the job anyway.

The garage would prefer just to drop the sumps and re-fill the amount of trans fluid they drained from there, but as we know that will leave a lot of the old fluid in the torque converter and cooler. I don't really want to do this several times just to get the old stuff out.

They also repeat what i see a lot of people saying on the web regarding full flushes which is that the trans cleaner fluid which they pump through is quite aggressive and will loosen muck/material shed from the bands and cause slipping or blockages when the new fluid goes in.

However, I cannot see what the point of a part-change is.

Also, if you were to just drop the sumps, fill back up and do the same a few more times, I cannot see how will that differ from flushing out the whole lot but without using the transmission cleaner. fluid

So, in relation to this 2.2 with 75k om the clock, all gentle usage with no towing/racing, always in neutral (ie not in-gear against the brake) at standstill, what is the general feeling about the full flush with trans cleaner as opposed to a mere full (or as near as can be done) change of fluid?

Thanks in advance

Omega General Help / Heater bypass valve
« on: 25 October 2018, 00:51:15 »
Hello all
The replacement valve has been leaking again and I'm not looking forward to this job again. I really don't want to have to do it yet again after this so can anyone recommend which parts manufacturer to turn to for the replacement part please? Are oem still available?
Most seem unbranded or febi bilstein or topran. I'm not familiar with these makes and I mote that auto vaux are supplying eg filters from new to me suppliers too!

Any parts/supplier recommendations gratefully received.

General Car Chat / Car and Motorbike multivehicle insurance
« on: 26 September 2017, 21:48:46 »
Hello all

i'm sure we are now all quite familiar with multivehicle/family policies but i'm having a tortuous task finding an insurance company who will do reasonable insurance on the Omega AND motorcycle.

Yes, i've trawled the back of car mags and searched  online and you do indeed see many adverts; however once you call them they won't answer the easy question of "do you offer it". Instead it takes them ages to go through every question in the book before deciding that they don't offer such policies anyway. I can't be the only Omega owner who has a bike too, so any recommendations from anyone else out there? I dont want the other extreme either where the company wants you to insure everything with them either!

Recommendations of reputable companies most welcome.

Cheers

Hello

has anyone on the forum done this successfully?

I've sourced spare sumps just in case and was thinking of putting a drain plug kit in each sump of the AR25 box.

Although the sumps seem to have provision in their sides for an OEM drain because of the shape (perhaps in previous incarnations of this box?) If I follow the two most obvious places on the rear of each sump, and use them for the drain location, the result would be one on each side of the car. I suppose this poses no practical difficulty if using a large enough container, unless anyone can suggest otherwise, and the filler is on one side of one sump anyway.

I've tried to insert a pic or two to this thread but without success! (doesn't bode well for the job does it???!)

cheers

Hello all

in a fit of interior valeting, I rubbed away part of the rubbery coating on the black gearshifter surround and the headlight rotary knob (Omega B, auto). Every time I look at them they irritate me and remind me of the evils of haste...

Can anyone shed light on how to remove the two items without damaging anything else, (preferably I dont need to take whole units off) and maybe even point me to a supplier of new replacements? Used are likely to be as worn, I suspect.

Cheers in advance!
