Just make sure that the key actually unlocks the driver's door and/or leave the bonnet popped with a piece of wood or similar to prevent it being closed accidentally.

General Car Chat / Re: Breakdown cover
« on: 23 November 2023, 13:47:58 »
Been an AA member almost the whole time since owning a car.

Only had an issue in 2001 when my Omega 3.0 of the time broke down in Manchester with jammed A/C compressor.  Waited for almost 2.5 hours for an AA sub-contracted mechanic to arrive.  Then waited another 1.5 hours for an AA relay truck to turn up and my earderly parents and I back to Southam in Warwickshire, arriving there at 0130 hours.
Very unhappy, so complained to AA who promptly refunded my whole year's membership fee.

Never had another problem with the AA.

The other week I had the alternator problem with the Omega 3.2 after just completing a local journey. Called the AA and a friendly man arrived 20 minutes after initial phone call and diagnosed the problem. Helped me get the car into my garage tlawait a booking at my local Vx dealer.  On the morning of the garage appointment another very friendly and helpful AA man turned up at the appointed time and fitted a temporary battery to last long enough for me to take the car to the Vx dealer. Once there, took thier battery off and offered to take me back home.

All for no charge beyond my usual membership fee.

Staying with the AA.

For one company Carlton we had RAC cover. It broke down with a snapped cam belt on the M4 40 miles from home in Bristol.  Sat beside the motorway for almost 2 hours, only for them to tow me to a service centre. From there a sub-contracted truck relayed us all to home. So after about 4.5 hours we eventually got home.  Complained, but no compensation.

No, I will be sticking  with the AA.

I'm 70 in march but I've been assured it's the new 40
???
that's like winding the clock back on a car  ::)
the body and moving parts will still be worn out  :D

Lizzie , I hope your feeling much better  :)
don't forget to spend a few hours putting a nice coat of wax on the Omega before winter  :P ;D :D

Thanks Dave :-* :-*
As for the car; stuff that at the moment!  Once I have the specialist treatment from the surgeons of St Thomas Hospital, London, I will be lucky to  be able to polish my coffee table! ::) ;D

The car is in the garage for at least 8 weeks now, in addition to the time spent outside my daughter's house since Caffyns delivered it back there ;)

Omega General Help / Re: Mirrors dont fold on impact
« on: 23 November 2023, 07:58:42 »
My mirrors do fold in when I want them to without any real effort.  However, they are fairly solid things that certainly will break other mirrors that come into contact with them, or will break themselves if they come into contact with my garage door frame!!! ::) ::)

I have replaced the outer casing of the door mirror unit a few times, and once the glass with units bought online from scrap dealers. This must be the only way to find them now as the new parts dried up ages ago. ;)

Thanks James and Jonneydog :-* :-*

I am pleased to say that Caffyns successfully fitted the AS alternator, bought by me from Autodoc for £107, all in,, for a fitting only charge of £200.
The way things have been for me, in am completely happy with this result, that the Caffyns service Manger helped me with, as  this issue I have put to bed at last.  ;)

James, thanks for your offer on this one and I will certainly remember it for any future difficulty :-*
I must now accept that working on cars, or anything that is a serious job just cannot happen.  Bloody "old" age! >:(

I am only 70 ::) ;D

Only just read this Lizzie, thank goodness you were able to make that 999 call & that you are making a recovery, but be sure to take it steady gentle exercise etc. As someone said earlier a close call but people of our age are tough and determined..👍

Thanks Rangie :-*

Oh yes, the bastard's will not get me yet! ;D. Nor will they get my Omega >:D

Best wishes dear and a swift recovery, my uncle has ended up with a pacemaker after 3 heart attacks and he cant use a welder or power tools now incase it affects it. No more escaping to the garage to get away from my aunt!!

Thanks :-*

Just being able to legally drive again will be good, if not absolutely essential now.

All the best Lizz, get plenty of good grub down you👍

Thanks :-*
People joke about hospital food, but at least here in Ashford it is very good for mass catering.  Really tasty, sensible portions, and great trolley staff dishing it out …..

Yep, Harefield meals were really good, you get a proper menu in colour as well.  :y  High Wycombe cardio unit on the other hand, a lot of my meals looked like they’d been run over before getting to me.  ;D  Staff were ok though.  :y
Tip of the day Lizzie, to pass away the time, get someone to bring in an iPad and ear buds and give Netflix a caning.  :y

;D. Oh yes, my smart phone has been very busy already catching up with all the soaps, and other programmes I
love but missed for about 10 days. This includes Bangers & Cash which reminds me of all those wonderful cars of my childhood, Austin's, Morris, Wolsleys, Ford's, Vauxhall's, Armstrong, Standards, Bentleys........etc etc....the list goes on & on!!!  It has taken my mind off the present situation and reminded me of simpler times 8) 8)

As for the iPad; I have decided against having unnecessary tech equipment here in hospital.  I don't want to place temptation in someone's way! ;)

I buy from AUTODOC too I’ve found looking at the prices from day to day is wise as their discount can vary from 20 to 40 percent in a day😱 great service but take a bit longer obviously as they’re so far away.

Oh yes, I do love their "limited time offers"!  Like with the alternator, the previous cam belt kit, and other bits and pieces big money savings are to be had.  ;)

:) That’s the way, always look for something good out of a bad situation, a good mindset is a great advantage👍

Yep.Agreed. I learnt from young, from a wartime family, that was the way to be.  Self pity was not allowed, which has been hard at times. But I have won through against adversity inbusiness and my personal life after seeing my loving parents do it. :)
