Failed MOT!!!
« on: 22 February 2008, 12:45:42 »

Hi. My omega failed it's MOT this morning. :( :(
1. Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive. [7.3.2b]
2. Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive. [7.3.2c]
The tester said it might be the 'cats'. Is he right? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, MadMark73.

It could be tha cats, but a whole host of other things could cause the emissions to go out, and given that cats are very expensive, they are the last thing to change.

Does the engine run Ok during all conditions? If fuel consumption normal?

Does the ECU report any trouble codes? First step is probably a paperclip test.

The temp gauge is usually between 92.5 and 95. the car runs smooth and no other problems that I know of.  Not sure what a paper clip test is thou.

Is the exhaust system holed (although I would have thought that this would have been picked up by the tester)?

Is the air filter clean?

Do you give the car regular(ish) blasts?  I learnt a while ago that with gentle driving (which I do 99.9% of the time) the cats can become less efficient as I failed a test for this reason.  I took the car for a good blast and, after that, it sailed through the test.

As others have said, do the paperclip test which shows up any fault codes which may be present.  There is an explanation of how to do the test itself and what the various fault codes are in the maintenance section.

Hope this helps
