Blowing exhaust manifold
« on: 22 December 2019, 11:19:24 »

1999 old shape 2.5 petrol manual estate
My last Omega is getting noisy, clearly has an exhaust leak in the region of the left hand exhaust manifold, which has a concealing shield around it.
MOT is due next April. I shall probably scrap it then, but should I consider the possibility of replacing the manifold? Car is not very rusty.

My old 2.5 used to blow at the offside manifold but only when the engine was cold. Once warm it was as quiet as a church mouse. The mot station thought it was a cracked manifold but I never investigated it as it went through mot's once warmed up.

If you're really thinking of scrapping it in 3 or 4 months time do you really want to go to the time/trouble/expense of fixing it? If you were keeping it for another year then I'd say yes investigate the blow[could be manifold gasket, manifold itself or even a loose fixing causing a poor joint]and repair with good used/new part.

MOT it now, and use that pass or failure list to decide if you're going to keep the car. Worth the £30 to make an informed decision.

Thanks for advice.
I had a 2.5 estate before with a cracked exhaust manifold, but that got quieter when warm; this one does not. I changed that manifold without any head studs breaking off, and bought a second hand manifold cheaply enough. This one might change easily enougjh, might not. Also I cannot see a cheap manifold on e-bay at the moment. I shall go on using the car till April, and see what turns up.
Also I have seen one or two Vectras auctioned on e-bay, but did not bid for them. Now I shall watch more carefully.

Steve Brown, Omega Spare Parts, is offering me an exhaust manifold that will fit my Omega 2.5, a Land Rover turbo diesel, and a BMW. Sounds too good to be true. At £32 it's cheap. I should like to keep the Omega running if possible, it's a lovely drive.

I'd examine the exhaust and find out exactly what is blowing before ordering any parts Terry ,you have a pit IIRC ?
then make sure the parts you order are correct ,NOT dirty diesel tractor parts  :D
as your last Omega is a manual , Don't scrap it ,sell it ,the last manual sold for £400 spares or repairs(engine shot) on ebay  :y
if your last omega is not rusty ,then bolt on repairs like exhaust components are cheap to keep you driving in the comfort that omega offers  :)

You need to confirm that the manifold is actually cracked.

And no, a diesel 2.5 manifold won't fit your car. Ever. Even if it is £32 :-X

You started with "left hand exhaust manifold".
Is that the exhaust manifold on the nearside bank of the V6?

Don't scrap it for @£100, Chuck it on eBay,  buyer collects, no reserve auction, ,bet it goes for more than the£140 you got for the last one.

I watched a YT video where a bloke fixed a cracked EX manifold  :)
A powerful vacuum cleaner nozzle was shoved up the exhaust pipe & 2 part liquid metal was painted over the crack & was seen to be sucked down into it.
I do like the idea of this  ;D  even if does sound bonkers
