diff oil change
« on: 17 January 2017, 01:11:34 »

just read the maintenance guide on this.  i assume there is no drain plug hence the need to take the cover off.

can't be a***d with all that and getting covered in smelly hypiod, any reason why i shouldn't just suck out the oil through the filler with my trusty 12v engine oil change pump and refill? actually i'd top it up first so i know how much leaked out and to give it a flush.

For the sake of ten bolts, surely better to remove the cover... also gives the opportunity to inspect the mechanicals...

Once removed, you can file away the casing to a depth of about 4mm at the centre bottom bolt to act as a sump drain using the bolt as a sump plug :y

yes but its unplug 2 abs sensors, 2 x 18mm bolts, 9x 15mm bolts, get covered in oil, remove cover, clean up mating services, apply sticky sealant to hands, fit cover, torque up 2 x 18 mm bolts to 90nm, apply threadlock to 9 x 15mms and torque up to 60nm, replug abs sensors....

quite possibly it would leak afterwards unless i am scrupulous with the cleaning...

i think she should be grateful i am changing her 'oil for life', not expect an inspection of her private bits as well. or a new hole fitting.

Halfajobbob ;D

Seriously, if you can't be bothered to remove the cover, which incidentally probably leaks already..., then why bother to jack it up at all :-\

The differential is a tight fit in its case, so you're unlikely to suck out much of the oil. Although it's probably almost empty: I got almost a litre in mine when I 'topped it up'

I beleve you can 'install' a drain plug by drilling though a specific bolt hole....
may be wrong, but worth a search.

Bottom right... I suggested judicious use of a file, Master suggests very careful drilling,  :y

What is the OOF recommended interval for this procedure?

Clearly the VX interval is - never.

Its really quite a straight forward job ,and worrying how little oil does come out when you remove cover plate as most can be drained down carefully once face plate is loose.

Quite a satisfying job when you compare how much of the 1ltr new oil you get in compared to what was removed so best advise is do the job properly and rest assured in the knowledge your diff is correctly filled.

Yes drilling through the correct bolt hole will 'create' a drain which can be plugged with the bolt easily enough.

The 50k is for LSD diffs, the reason being that the friction modifiers fail over time and they start to judder then wear accelerates quickly, the standard diff should be ok for much longer (but its cheap and easy to do)

Exactly how I did it. (Listens for shouts of derision), and in both cases got the required amount of new oil in with no problem. :y

I just carefully drilled mine out after a good blast to get the oil nice and hot, the flow of oil should bring out any swarf, just go through nice and slow  :y
