Genuine or pattern parts?
« on: 13 July 2006, 17:14:06 »

I'm looking at a cambelt kit for a V6 on ebay, says "Genuine Vauxhall 2.5 V6 24 Valve Timing Belt Kit NEW" but the box says gates power grip?  this doesn't sound genuine to me?

So it looks like a few of you have changed said belt, has anybody used this kit and is it ok?

I only got my car 2 weeks ago, service history that came with it says belt changed at 80K service, now done 102K so may do the belt in not to distant future. I've got few other things to sort on it as well, cam cover oil leak for one!

Any info will be appreciated. :)

Thought it might be, the Ebay seller is actually quite close to where I live and is a specialist engine centre. Any idea how much these things should cost??

A dealer can supply for arounf £85 + VAT on tradeclub (if you can blag it). I think around £120 retail. Ronnie McB used to be able to get decent pattern ones cheaper, not sure if if still can.

Even though 'Gates' is a reputable make.......when it comes to the elastic band and pulleys, always go for genuine ;)

That comment is made with experience of pattern parts :'(

Brake discs too - I had no end of trouble with warping pattern discs.

Yeah, I've had no end of hassle with pattern front discs.  Only ever used genuine cambelt kits, so can't comment on pattern ones...

Gates are as good as they get. The rollers will be SKF, same as vx Genuine ones. Highly recommended kit and not a bad price either. Go for it.

I bought my cambelt kit from Autovaux. The belt was Gates and the bearings SKF.

It seems SKF make the genuine bearings so that's OK, and a bit of research on Gates shows them to be good quality kit and quite a big OEM supplier.

I'd use the kit again, especially after the recent run of genuine tensioner failures.

I as a rule (with the odd exception i.e. mr McBurgers excellently priced conti kits) use genuine but, at trade club prices its worth it.

Just want to remind to anyone that SKF is the "daddy" of bearings. So yes SKF/gates kit is pretty good.

i think the general rule for most car parts is go original, no doubt may on here have a tale to tell re pattern part such as brakes and exhausts. The money you save short term is eaten up via poor performance or replacing the part early.
