Omega General Help / 2.5TD issue.
« on: 15 October 2013, 20:51:40 »
I have done a search but didnt find anything matching this issue.

The car runs fine for the most part but gear changes are a bit of a trick.  As you dip the clutch and lift off the power the EML comes on momentarily. If you wait for it to go out (only about a second) before lifting the clutch then all is fine.
If not then the car hesitates to the point of severe engine braking - quite a hard jolt before picking up again.

I have checked for stored codes and have the following codes:
91 & 92 - cruise control apparently although its not fitted.
64 - Fuel quantity control device voltage low - present

Obviously I have seen plenty of posts about code 64 and will try the diesel magic solution, but I have not found any posts referencing the same symptoms.

Any guesses?

The car was on loan to a friend at the time.   :o
Of course when I was told the car had caught fire I assumed power sounder but no...

As it was being parked up there was a burning smell then the drivers footwell erupted in flame!
Has anyone heard of this happening or have any ideas as to what could have caused it?  As far as I'm aware the intention is to repair the wiring which shouldnt present any problems, but that would possibly be treating the symptom and not the cause.

Any pointers welcome!!!

EDIT:

As I posted this I got a text saying the damage was greater than first thought, so the car is being offered for parts.

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - Estate load cover.
« on: 13 October 2013, 20:07:39 »
Does anyone have a good load cover going spare?
A good friend has just bought a 2.5 diesel estate and I would like to help him out.

Cheers.

Cars for Sale & wanted / F/S 1998 2.5 CDX Estate Auto
« on: 23 June 2013, 18:44:49 »
The time has come to let my Omega go.
She's a 1998 2.5 CDX.

Showing 95000 miles.
The engine was replaced in March with a Swindon racing engine which has had a top end rebuild.
New cam belt kit and water pump fitted in April.
3.2 exhaust manifolds. (SAI deleted, EGR blanked off)
New exhaust (cats back) fitted this time last year.
New drop links last month.
Everything works as it should with no knocks, bangs or other orrible noises.
MOT'd until March 2014.
Stacks of history including the original bill of sale.
Bad bits:
She suffered a few key scratches under previous ownership, and a couple of the usual car park dings. This is the worst one:

Key scratches:

One of the trims has a small bit missing. It never bothered me much but a full set of F/L trims will come with the car. They will need spraying as they are silver.

One of the cam covers is leaking. I have a set of alloy covers with good gaskets so I will probably fit them this week.
One small patch of rust starting on one rear arch - not like other 98MY Omega's that all seem to be tea bags!
She's on disabled tax.

This has been a great car to own but as I said - it's time to move her on.
£700

I'm just putting feelers out at this stage as I have a bad feeling about my gearbox which I just cant afford to replace.

If the car ends up being broken I will be offering the engine up for sale but I have little idea what it's worth.
Here's the spec:
Swindon racing engine no. VV019
New cam belt kit
New water pump
3.2 Exhaust manifolds fitted with GM gaskets.
Stainless steel oil cooler
Alloy rocker covers (plasitics would come with the engine)

In the short time I was driving the car with this engine fitted I found it to be very quiet and smooth with an aggressive pull at about 4000rpm.

Any ideas what it's worth?

Im still hoping to get the car running this weekend but as I said I'm not feeling too optimistic at the mo!

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Bit of an odd request...
« on: 21 March 2013, 22:26:05 »
...but does anyone have a set of torque converter bolts?
These are the ones that secure the converter to the flex plate.

It seems my assistant didnt tighten the bolts enough when my engine was fitted and they have now all departed.  Or at least that's the theory - and I hope it's right or I'll be going bloody mental!
Anyhoo... until I can get new bolts I'm off the road again, but I have two problems.
1) I need 6 but vauxhall sell them in packs of 5. They will not split a pack so I have to but two packs at £21 each!  I can get 25% off but still....
2) they don't stock them so would have to order them from the factory. That means a 10 working day delay.

So... does anyone have any sitting on a shelf somewhere?

Please?

Even if I can get just one it would half the bill at the dealer.

Omega General Help / What's this plug for?
« on: 15 March 2013, 18:50:29 »
I just refitted the loom to my replacement engine and can't seem to find a home for this small plug:

It's at the back of the engine and seems to want to locate close to the CTS and temp sender, both of which are connected.

Any ideas?

Does anyone have a passenger rear door in Z147 for a 1998 estate?
I'm also after a Bose sub for an estate.

Cheers.

Omega General Help / V6 Breather box - what's inside?
« on: 18 February 2013, 20:20:16 »
A friend of mine has offered to make a couple of bits for me in stainless steel and I thought a nice shiny breather box would look good.

Of course I would need to know what in there first.
Is it just a spacer where all four breathers come together or is there more than one compartment?

Anyone got one in the spares bin?

Omega General Help / This could be the end for my Omega
« on: 12 January 2013, 17:04:48 »
As some may recall I've had coolant leak issues with my 2.5 and had narrowed the likely cause to either the head gasket or a core plug in the head.
I had a feel down the back and the leak seems to be lower than the core plug so yesterday I started ordering the parts for a head gasket change.

However today when I moved the car off the drive I found this...

That's oil - and alot of it!
It seems to be dripping of the front of the sump and also more so from the subframe crossmember.  It looks like the leak is from above the sump somewhere but I cant be sure.
If it's the head gasket then no problem - I'm gearing up to replace them anyway. But if it's not then I just dont see how this car will survive.
The main suspect for me would be the sump itself as it did bottom out on the driveway the other day - not hard but you never know..  The question is... what will a replacement sump cost?
I really dont have any more money to spare as I live on a very tight budget so I can't keep throwing more money at it, and as you all know these cars just arent worth alot these days - especially with engine issues.
So if I cant sell it and I can't repair it I will just have to remove the few useful parts I can use/sell quickly then weigh it in.

Rant over... for now!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Dodged a bullet..
« on: 06 January 2013, 17:01:32 »
Figuratively speaking   :y

While I was busy looking for my water leak yesterday I thought I'd better check the condition of my powersounder.
It looked OK but I removed it anyway.

The plug was very tight in it's socket so I gave it a little wiggle and out it popped.... or at least some of it did.

The rest stayed in the socket and looked very melted/burnt.

Am I right in thinking this was a time bomb about to blow?

Omega General Help / Another coolant leak question.
« on: 30 December 2012, 20:58:11 »
I've had a persistent coolant leak on my 2.5 since I've had the car (about a year now!). In the spring I changed the HBV for a pattern part (I know!) which made no difference, so last weekend I got some new dowty washers and hollow bolts and got spannering.

I found that the old washers were pretty buggered and the bolts quite crusty, so I was confident that I would now have no more problems and topped up with antifreeze.

It's now worse!

I now have no heating at all and the coolant needs topping up every few days.  The car will overheat if sat in traffic even if the expansion bottle has plenty in it.  5 mins from home steam can be seen coming from the passenger side of the bonnet.

Today I got it warmed up and started investigating again and found water dripping down from the back of the engine, passenger side.
The water is mostly dripping from the engine/gearbox join and the crank sensor is wet.

So.... can anyone suggest anything up that way that I should be looking at?

Omega Gallery / Looking for pics of...
« on: 03 December 2012, 15:37:26 »
The Omega that has been done up like an american police car.
It's black and white (obviously) and has deeply dished steelies with chrome hubcaps.

I'm sure someone will remember it, or maybe someone here owns it?

 Here's hoping......
