2.2 dti difficult starting

hi, as above, i have a vec b 2.2 dti, i have noticed recently that on the colder mornings or if the car hasnt been used for a day or 2 it takes quite abit of turning over before it fires up, when it eventually does its followed by a nice puff of smoke, the rest of the day when i go to start it fires up no problem. before i got the works van home with me the vectra was in use every day so didnt really notice this starting issue untill the van come along. all 4 glowplugs have been replaced earlier this year, took the plastic "eco tec" cover of the engine yday and had a visual inspection of the leak of pipes and they seemed fine, no signs of any moisture from them. the diesel filter was last changed at 114000 miles and when removed was nice and clean, no signs of oil.

what woulld be the next course of action ?

Leak of pipes may look ok,but are a servicable item that needs changing,change all of them,it doesnt cost much but can be a bit fiddely to remove ,and then see how it starts,also could be a faulty relay.

relay as in glowplug relay ? if yes then ive allready sourced another one to see if it made the glowplugs stay on a tad longer, made no difference, replacement relay done exact same job as old one. am i better to source the original gm leak of pipe as i have read that aftermarket is shite and doesnt last, also is it worth buying new t - piece connectors ?

Nothing wrong with aftermarket leak off pipes,use new tee pieces,as they often get stuck solid in the pipe.

if new leak off pipes doesnt solve then what next ? i have read also about people changing the coolant temp sensor.

If the glow plugs and relay are new and it is still the same I would say it is air getting into the fuel system allowing over time the fuel to run back to the tank. Spill line are a common fault and the new kit from dealers is about £20 and comes with new T pieces. If after that it is still the same it could be top injector seals leaking so over time fuel runs back to tank. Do you park the with front up hill at all?

thanks for that, i could probably do the leak of pipes mate but i certainly wouldnt be confident in doing the injector seals.

My daughter is up in Alloa and I my be up to see her next month if your still having snags, I could take a look for you as I will have my tools with me as I need to do a job on her car when I'm next up. Just let me know if you are still having snags when you have done the leak off pipes.

i have been in touch with vx and its about £30 for leak off pipe and t pieces, is that about right ?

Available from any good parts distributor for less.

I always recommend fitting a priming bulb with internal one way avlve (as they all have) on these as

1) It allows the fuel system to be primed following a filter change/work on the fuel lines
2) Prevents drainback to the tank.

It also help protect the pump, the VP44's most common failing follows running without fuel (it uses the fuel to cool the power transisitors in th fuel pump fitted electrics).

correction, trade price for 1 metre leak off pipe and 3 t pieces is £36.
