HID lamps to halogen replacement
« on: 29 December 2016, 18:59:18 »

Hey all!

I've been reading the forum since I got my car. I found it very useful.

My question / problem is.
I have an original set of HID headlamps (bulbs are old, the beam is not right, and the ballasts are old too.)
I made some calculation, and my sum was that it is a lot cheaper to buy an aftermarket headlamp set (TYC or DEPO) but with halogen bulbs.
So my question is: Are the connectors compatible?
Will some message appear on the MID? (fault or something)
I've read the low beam message from other on the forum. (probably my car wont show that, cause my MID might have been "set off" with tech 2
I also read the fault codes from the headlamp leveling system ECU and a lot of DTC's have been there so the system is not working right now.

So I'm about to replace the headlamps, put the connectors back (of course the connector from the HID ballast goes to the H4 bulb)
Can I do that?

Thank you in advance, and sorry for my English

PS: I wish you a happy new year.  :)

In my experience tyc and depo lamps are not worth the cheap plastic they are made of. Poor quality. Cracks if you look at them hard and poor connectors. Get hella original lamps and avoid a world of trouble. Just my two cents:)

hid bulbs are incredibly cheap if you get them direct from china eg ebay.  choice of colour temps too.    I doubt they last as long mind.

Deep are ok at a fraction of the cost of Hella, which are much better made.

I would think carefully as headlights in not the Omegas strong point and you will notice the very poor illumination if you go from HID to standard.

Thank you Guys

Yes I've heard about the bad quality of these lamps. (TYC, DEPO)
years ago I bought DEPO light for my mondeo mk1, the quality is acceptable so far
Maybe I can haul Hella lamps, I will try
I think everything halogen will be better than the situation now.  (i have about 10 meters of light stain on the road :( )
The cost would be 1/3 with halogens
So are the two systems compatible (connectors)?

Better to fix what's fitted than to downgrade.

Quality Xenon d2s bulbs available for around £40 a pair... Depo light units need a bit of time spent fettling, but are around a quarter of the cost of Hella units and about five times cheaper than GM, all in all a fair trade imho ;)

I agree with the above comments, polish the lenses and fit new bulbs, you might as well fit square wheels while you`re at it  ;D
