driver door bangs when going over bumps
« on: 05 September 2016, 07:07:00 »

My driver door started making a quite loud bang when going over bums on higher speeds.
It comes from the latch on the B-pillar -> the door mechanism holds it too loose IMO.

I've only found here that the latch needs adjusting (moving a bit inwards) so that there is less room for door to move between rubber strips.

Is this the only solution?
Is it possible that the door mechanism is to loose/worn out?

Well possible, but worth tweaking the mechanism, it's really easy, did it myself recently (replaced 3 of the 4 doors so far)  :)

There's 3 culprit's

1 striker plate is worn, 2 door lock is worn,3 pins are worn.
I would check striker plate hasn't got a wear mark, and while door is open check pins for play by seeing if door moves up n down, on the pins.

My guess is door lock, as the knock comes from the lock-latch area.
I can replicate the knock by pulling the closed doors up and down (holding it by the outter handle and inner grab handle), so I can clearly hear where it comes from.

Can the lock be adjusted/fixed? Or only replacing it will cure the problem?

As for striker plate and pins - I'd expect the nosie from the front of the door, right?

The pins are at the front, and are probably not the problem.
The striker plate is bolted to the B-pillar and is what the lock catches on.

My mistake - I've refered to striker plate as latch. And tought that striker plate is the door strap plate.

Moved the striker plate a bit inwards -> no more banging  :y :y

Happy days! We're so used to thinking about cars as computer designed, robot-built machines, but there's still plenty of hand-built tiny 'tweaks' that can be done.  :)

Before my CDX was semi-retired, I remember it appeared something was loose inside the door, making a banging noise when going over bumps in the road (I usually try to avoid holes in the road, hence never driving in a straight line).

Now she's back on the road, the banging noise has returned, so having read this thread decided to adjust the B pillar latch, and hey presto after a couple of hours drive this afternoon, no banging present.

If it hadn't been for this forum, I'd have been busy taking the door cards off to investigate anything loose inside, but just turns out to be a good fitting door bouncing against the latch, and 1mm between friends  :D :D

The people driving behind me probably think i'm drunk  ( I don't actually drink alcohol) as I tend to try and avoid potholes and humps if I can as they shouldn't be there really.

Might be worth acquiring a new/other mechanism as they can wear to point of failure. Two obvious faliures being unable to open door from inside and coming open whilst driving.

Any notchyness when opening the door should be considered a warning of impending lock doom...

Ensure replacement is thoroughly oiled before fitting :y
