Whilst miles better than its predecessor, its unloved compared to the later ones, which are much better.

The 2.0TDCi is known for DMF failures and injector faults (which can lead to excessive engine wear, and even seizure).

I would second all of that. Injectors, turbo or DMF are all four figure jobs, and are a case of when not if. They're the reason why a tidy looking TDCI Mondeo can be bought for £500. It's a pity, as a working one is a good car.

I recently broke one for decent money, timing chain had been set wrong and damaged the top end ! There's a very strong demand for injectors, dmf , high pressure fuel pump's and turbo's so take that as you will !

I hate to say it but for that sort of money it is almost "disposable car" territory.

i.e. buy it, run it till something serious goes wrong. Hopefully get a year or so out of it. Any longer is a bonus. Then break and/or scrap . Years motoring for £600? (about three weeks hire car)

Then buy another.

Yep I'm with Varche on that.  It's Bangernomics! :y

I bet on the Mondeo forum if someone says 'Hey these Vauxhall Omegas are cheap!' there will be pages of reasons not to buy one. eg. They all leak oil, they all leak water, weak suspension, chew tyres for a pastime etc etc  ;D

But a £600 Mondeo is likely to already be exhibiting some or all of these symptoms. That's why it's £600! I saw one last week that he had owned for 10 days with a knackered startermotor. We bumpstarted it, and it had a nasty vibration through the clutch pedal - classic DMF symptoms which mean a new flywheel, clutch and starter.

Bangernomics requires a cheap car that will last for sometime without any money spent on it. A cheap TDCI Mondeo is far too much of a gamble to qualify. Buying one from the top end of the market doesn't reduce the risk by much either.

Speaking of which, I wonder if the new owner of a gleaming white Mercedes estate is aware of it's history?..... ::) ::) :)

If a car is a high miler, even though it's fairly young, what difference does it make if it's been used as a taxi? If the service history checks out ok and the upholstery isn't full of puke, then it's the same as any other car that's had a hard life. The price you pay should reflect this. I would be more put off by a well-used shin breaker.
