Numpty two routers question
« on: 19 October 2019, 19:49:15 »

I have a Linksys E1200 version1 router on my satellite modem.

Checked the software and it is running version 2 software since over a year ago. I have no recollection of installing it. Tried today to install vers 1.0 firmware with no success. Did factory reset and was surprised to see it still had ver 2 firmware. Reason for trying to change it is I am having internet problems and supplier says their service is working fine.

Anyway enough of background. If I buy another identical but later router could I easily use the older router on the end of a long ethernet cable from a port on the new router elsewhere in the house.? Operative word is easily

Most of this shite either self updates, or gets pushed an update from your ISP if its ISP provided.

If the same router is used by *any* ISP globally, you tend to find that they can't be downgraded to an earlier version of software, as firmware locks are put in place.

To your question, presumably you only have one connection out to the Internet - the sat one - so why would you need a 2nd router?  (Obviously, that's making a huge assumption that you don't have complex routing going on, and if you do, a lot of these cheapy shite routers can't detect routing circles).

Or is it you want to use purely as a WiFi Access Point?  The success of that depends wholeheartedly on the router in question - some can, some have things implemented in such a way that it either wouldn't work, or you'd end up double NAT'ing everything (bad idea)

No, just want a second wifi point as that part of house plus outside  is a dead point.

Funnily enough installing the latest software has significantly improved the speed. Might not need to buy another router

Despite The Boy advising against these as they slow throughput ( if I remember correctly) I have one which works for email and forum chat.

I need something a bit better to include a smart TV.

I will get an access point and stick that on the end of the ethernet cable from a router point.
