Headlamp washers
« on: 23 February 2017, 13:50:27 »

As my car has just failed its MOT on these not working, and I am seriously short of time, do they have a separate pump to the screens?

And is it a generic Vauxhall one?

Washer fluid tank has another pump, could try swapping them over? Could be clogged at jets though, I would reach in and disconnect feed pipe and try the jets. See if water comes out, if so blockage is down stream.

Also there should be a gauze pickup? That could be restricting flow, remove the pump and check/clean the gauze

From memory  :D Nick the headlight washer pump is different from the screen pump,as remember changing mine year or so ago.
Found receipt with part number  90508709 which was for the headlight pump..as said it does have a small rubber boot filter which fits into the reservoir first then the pump pushes into that.
Is 12 volts across terminals making it work or just click as mine had seized solid and new pump needed.

Thanks all, I had to ask as the car is at home and I'm at work.
I can't do anything to it on Saturday, and I go to France in it Monday week.

Ordering a replacement pump before I look at it isn't what I would normally do, but I am running out of time to do it in the week. Getting the part number was a bonus

The other failure item, welding in the OSR door shut doesn't worry me.

The headlamp wash pump has its own fuse next to its relay in the fuse/relay box under the bonnet ..... green IIRC
The two pumps are completely different from  each other

Fairly sure I swaped the pumps before, to see if the fault moves, from memory the HL Washer pump is the higher of the two.

Screen Washer Pumps may differ if its an Estate but should still work.

And don't forget the headlamps need to be turned on for the washers to work!

I did try that when I got home!

The pumps are different; all the fuses next to the relays in the underbonnet fusebox are good; I can't hear the pump turning, and it's definitely different to the pump for the screens.

A quick search with Andrew's part number finds a new pump for £20, so I shall buy one, although I will have look a bit closer at the current one when I've welded the hole on Sunday.

I ordered the pump before I went out last night, but had a few minutes on it when I got home today.
A few seconds with  a power probe confirmed the problem: the pump's knackered. And it seems the person who designed the washer bottle and pump installation must have been new in the job; open the bonnet, the pumps and their wiring are visible and access is easy

Yes its all quite easy access with its mouth open  ;D

Think given the location of the pumps to the front open grille they get quite a hard life so expect its just given in..Worth giving the entire tanka good flush out with a hose once the pumps are out

The replacement pump arrived yesterday, and I fitted it after doing the welding.
I now have working headlamp washers; considering how effective the pump is, I don't think they've ever worked in the six years I've owned it.

Re-test tomorrow if they can fit it in.

Fingers crossed for a pass ticket now Nick  :y

Only down side to having working headlight washers is they don't half drain the water down quickly.

Enjoy France  :y

Certain times of year, I pull the fuse from hers, else she'll use all 6l in a day.

On my one, it doesn't use much, a) because I rarely use the screen washers anyway, b) Although they "work", mine have little pressure now.

No need for crossed fingers: I'd fixed the problems so it passed.

I rarely check the level, and even then I've never had to put more than about 3 litres in the washer bottle.

This does all suggest they have never worked.
