Some reason standard for motorbikes, I've never had to supply these for car insurance.

But each motorcycle insurance review I had to send these in, apart from licence check code.

I never had to show my licence when I put a bike on the road again.

I'm not sure that your scenario would hold water in court, aaron, because they accepted the premium and the attendant risk. If they had any objection they should have refused the premium.
They can't have it both ways!

Ron.

You'd hope, yet my insurer has a statement on their phone line that states something like:

"If you fail to tell us of something that could affect your insurance quote we may treat your insurance as though it never existed"

While I admire that approach, have you ever had to fight in court to get an insurance payout? I can only imagine them using your failure to provide the details they request as a "reason to treat your insurance as null & void".

It's the broker asking for a photocopy of the license so they don't have to pay to access the database. The insurer already has access to all the info on the license once you tell them your driver number, plus they have access to the MIB database listing all accidents and previous claims.

I'll happily produce my licence and passport as proof of identity if required by a court to prove I've been telling the truth. However, if you want a copy of them, it's £1000 per item.

And I've still got the old style paper (no photo) driving license. :)

This only applies to a claim made by you (first party). How much do you think they're going to offer you for a 15 year old Omega?

The insurance company must by law pay out to a third party - they cannot invalidate that part of your insurance after the event. They probably will come after you for the money if they think you have lied/misled/failed to disclose something that may affect the premium on the application form.

I'd be surprised if they were offering me anything.. they'd be even more surprised if I was trying to claim for one when I don't own one ;) ;D

Pretty sure I've never provided that either.  :-\

I once had a 3 way phone call between my insurer, DVLA & myself to verify my licence details during a claim

Is a licence required by law to drive a motor car or motor bicycle on a public highway?

I must look into this. :)

I've had to show similar for bike insurance, but not for car.

If its a condition when the policy was taken out, you don't have a leg to stand on if you don't provide the details, and then try a claim.  If you didn't read the small print or listen to the recorded message, you have the standard cooling off period to cancel and pick an insurer not demanding this.

Probably trying to collect data from their customers so they can sell it on.  ::)

Probably trying to collect data from their customers so the government can surveil them
