PFL Dash Display Removal - Help please!!
« on: 05 July 2016, 07:53:36 »

I need to get to the back of my dashboard radio / Trip computer display.  Some kind soul has cut the wiring for the radio loom.   Now I'm left with 4 brown/white wires coming from behind the dash, and 4 brown/white wires on the connector, but I've no idea which one needs to be joined to which.  I could just fit an aftermarket head unit that doesn't need the dash display, but that would be too easy....!

As I would like to get the dash display fully functioning, my plan is to pull the display out of the dash and work out which wire is which from the source, i.e. the display unit.  To do this, I guess I need to remove the speedo binnacle, as the radio display seems to be part of it.

So, how does the speedo binnacle unit come out of the dashboard?  I can't seem to see any screws etc. Or is there another way to work out the wiring?  Any help would be much appreciated!

The search button is your friend  :D

Pop the centre vents out, remove the two screws (close off the vent so they dont get lost in the pipes) then lift off the vent face,
there should be a single screw left to take out. next remove the steering coloumn cowl and there should be a screw to remove.

the clocks should lift out from the left and slide, Do not have your key in the ignition

Useful information, thanks.  Have found an old post wwith pictures, although it sounds a lot easier that I was expecting!

Next question....

By gaining access to the back of the dash display, am I likely to find what I'm looking for?  I could really do with a diagram of the wires that lead to the dash unit..  I'm basically looking for the ones that communicate with the radio.  I don't know how many (if any) of the severed brown/white coloured wires in my car are the correct ones that feed info between the dash display and the radio???

the only wires behind the dash go to the mfd, the speedo has its own fixed connector block

So it should be fairly easy to find the wires, but is there anything on the back of the MFD that tells me which one is which?  Or a diagram?  I have the wiring diagram for the radio connector block....

I'm assuming its numbers 17, 18, 19 and 22 that lead to the MFD, but how do I know which is which at the MFD end, since they are all the same colour?  I need a diagram of some sort if anyone has one?

Cheers for that, but I'm not sure that it will help much.  Which of the brown/white "Radio Serial Interface" wires is which.  I presume its pins 9, 10 and 11 that need to connect to 17, 18 and 22 at the radio connector end, but which connects to which?

Does anyone  have one to hand? I've managed to work out which pins on the mfd relate to which bits of wire where they've been cut, and labelled them. Just need to know which ones they relate to on the radio connector now

There's also a guide for retrofitting Mid to Tid fitted cars...

This also includes most of the pinouts ;)

Google it, there are PDF Manuals and Wiring Diagrams out there, the Wiring Diagrams will probably be in German but the Pin Out numbers should be ok.   ;)

Just a shot in the dark,  but we're the wires cut at an angle?

Then you could just match them up, or just lable them and try each one in a different pin till it works as there's only 3 wires
