To do these properly, especially with a known problem, BOTH sumps must come off, to check if the thrust washer has failed, (bits in the front sump if so), if the latter, the box must come off to replace the washer. :y

My autobox on my 2.5 used to pay up from time to time and I used to top up the fluid and it was fine.  :y

I always used the same washer, the box had done nearly 250,000 miles and I never got round to changing the fluid and filters, so I expect it was the original fluid.  ::)  It was black!  :o  ;D

I'd check and top up the fluid and go from there.  :y

Removing the box, changing the trust washer and changing solenoids is very doable DIY. I did all of those on the drive with help from here and been great ever since.

i suppose like others have said its got to be worth checking the fluid level first and foremost. then if its found to be low ,topped up and see if it all works correctly for a few months to be sure.then the owner could do a full sump off fluid snd filter change later.

Went out to car today and started it, drove it about 2miles to local supermarket and switched off.  Came back out switched it on, the Engine light (not the spanner one) stayed on. The error code is the two I had before P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit No Signal (04) - Not present and P1700 - SVS request via CAN (00) - Not present.

The camshaft was changed out a week or so with a genuine one. Even with these errors the gearbox changed up and down with no problems.  Would the crank sensor breaking down cause the codes and not it's own?

Thought my luck wouldn't last.  Went to Eurocarparts yesterday and ended up with 5ltrs of Dexron 3 fluid for the price of £5.
Thanks for any help.

Sorry meant the camshaft sensor was replaced recently and not the camshaft itself. ;D

Hi Doctor Gollum

I have been busy. Will definately be changing the Cranksensor as you recommended. Hoping to do it in the next day or two.

Thanks for your reply.

My '52 Desmond has both codes, so in due course I will be changing both... But being a manual it still functions normally  :D

Along with the suspension all round, half the cooling system because it leaks, the thermostat, cambelt and camcover gaskets...

MoT is due in April, and if mechanically sound and relatively rust free, I might consider getting the bodywork done ::)

Currently collecting parts... Engine first, then suspension, then MoT.

its a genuine dealers sensor. Not one from ebay etc. The ebay ones are never any good.

Hi Doctor Gollum, would love a manual but due to weakness in left leg can only drive automatics.  Should have seen the driving instructors face when I first tried doing lessons in a manual, the clutch was not a happy bunny. So on his recommendation passed my test in a Automatic. Good luck with your Desmond.
